He said the brothers’ spending did not mean he was enjoying himself: “The idea that I was having a good time is absurd. Everything was to cover up this horrible pain of not wanting to be alive.” The often-used phrase “cover up pain” is only a shortened rendering of his full account.
What Erik Menendez said about the spending
Erik’s words are a retrospective explanation in the documentary, not a statement from the 1990 investigation. TIME reported the full quotation from his recorded interview: “The idea that I was having a good time is absurd. Everything was to cover up this horrible pain of not wanting to be alive.” (TIME)

His account describes how he understood his state of mind; it is not an independently verified psychological finding and does not, by itself, establish why the brothers killed their parents. The documentary transcript also records Lyle describing the months after the deaths as disorienting: he said he took a semester off, felt adrift and became involved in business activity with help from older male relatives. That, too, is Lyle’s retrospective account. (Netflix documentary transcript)
What the reported $700,000 figure means
The $700,000 figure is an estimate attributed to Lyle’s spending, not an audited total for both brothers. A Los Angeles Times report published July 22, 1990, said friend Glenn Stevens calculated that Lyle spent $700,000 in the first weeks after the deaths. The same report said a relative put the amount closer to $500,000. Both figures are estimates reported by the newspaper; they should not be treated as settled accounting. (Los Angeles Times)

What the accounts say the money went toward
The lists of purchases differ by source and should not be combined into a single precise ledger. The 1990 Los Angeles Times report names a Porsche, a Rolex, clothing and a Princeton café among Lyle’s purchases. It also quotes Lyle saying the purchases fit the way he had lived and that he enjoyed quality things. (Los Angeles Times)
An Associated Press case overview, citing a Ninth Circuit opinion, lists three Rolex watches, a Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet and a Princeton restaurant for Lyle; for Erik, it lists a Jeep Wrangler and a full-time tennis coach. TIME’s 2024 account of the documentary also mentions extravagant spending, including a Porsche, three Rolex watches and a tennis coach said to cost $50,000 a year. That annual coaching cost is TIME’s reported figure, not an established component of the $700,000 estimate. (AP; TIME)

How spending fits into the disputed case explanations
The purchases became part of a larger argument over motive, but they do not resolve it. TIME summarizes the prosecution’s position as a claim that the brothers killed their parents to gain access to an estate worth roughly $14 million. The defense argued they acted in self-defense after years of sexual abuse by their father. Erik’s later explanation of the spending is not proof that settles that competing account. (TIME)
AP, citing an appellate opinion, reports that the brothers made purchases while believing they would inherit millions. AP also says the family later stated there was no inheritance because legal fees and taxes consumed the assets and properties were sold at a loss. These are reported case details, not a conclusion that can be drawn from the spending totals alone. (AP)
