English Teacher turns the daily friction of a Texas high school into character-driven comedy: idealistic teacher Evan Marquez tries to hold to his principles while students, colleagues, parents and politics complicate the job. Created by and starring Brian Jordan Alvarez, the FX sitcom has a topical premise and a strong comic voice, though critics differed on how completely its first season delivered.
What is English Teacher about?
Brian Jordan Alvarez created the series and stars as Evan Marquez, an English teacher at a high school in Austin, Texas. Hulu describes Evan as navigating personal, professional and political pressures while trying to be principled. That tension supplies the comedy: his convictions meet the unpredictable demands of teaching and the relationships that make up school life.
The series uses school controversies as material for stories rather than treating them as a policy explainer. FX’s second-season episode descriptions touch on subjects including a school play, waste management, college applications, a military recruiter, student phone policies, standardized tests, accreditation and graduation. Those topics give the sitcom a recognizable public-school setting, but the show’s focus is the people caught up in the arguments and everyday complications.
Why does the comedy work?
Evan’s earnestness is a useful comic counterweight to the messiness around him. He wants to act on his principles, but being a teacher means navigating competing expectations from students, fellow teachers and the wider school community. The resulting humor can be topical without reducing every character to a position in a debate.

The setting also lets the series play with generational misunderstandings and questions of queer visibility as part of ordinary school and personal life. Its appeal rests on the friction among those concerns, Evan’s work and his relationships—not on any promise that one sitcom can settle the issues it depicts.
What did critics think of season one?
The early reviews were positive but not unanimous. TIME’s Judy Berman, reviewing the series ahead of its September 2, 2024 premiere, called it “easily the year’s best new sitcom to date.” She praised its balance of “funny character beats” and timely observations about public education. Berman also saw room for the supporting characters to develop, while expressing confidence the show had time to grow.

Adrian Horton’s September 2, 2024 review for The Guardian also recognized the show’s wit and potential, describing a “tricky mix of wit, silly humor and heart.” But Horton found the first season slight and uneven: the preview episodes left story threads dangling, scenes cut short and too much unsaid. The difference is useful context for the “hilarious hit” label: TIME was enthusiastic about the show’s confident start, while The Guardian liked its ingredients more than the season’s overall cohesion.
How is the series rated?
Rotten Tomatoes displayed a 94% Tomatometer from 55 critic reviews and an 85% Popcornmeter from more than 250 audience ratings when checked on October 8, 2026. Its season pages showed 98% for season one and 91% for season two. These are changing aggregator scores, not permanent measures of reception; the named TIME and Guardian reviews show why the critical response is better understood as positive with some reservations than as universal acclaim.

Where can you watch English Teacher?
As of October 8, 2026, Hulu’s U.S. series listing showed two seasons and 18 episodes, and FX’s official page directed viewers to Hulu. Rotten Tomatoes’ viewing guide also listed seasons one and two on Hulu and Disney+ and said the series could be bought on Fandango.
