Endurance connects Ernest Shackleton’s 1914 Antarctic expedition with the 2022 search that found his shipwreck. The documentary, directed by Jimmy Chin and Chai Vasarhelyi, pairs a story of survival after disaster with a modern team’s effort to locate and document the lost ship.
What is the Endurance documentary about?
The film follows two expeditions separated by more than a century. Shackleton’s Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition set out in 1914 to cross Antarctica. Endurance22, organized by the Falklands Maritime Heritage Trust, set out in 2022 to find the vessel that had carried Shackleton’s party into the Weddell Sea.

The storylines share a ship, but not the same stakes: one is about human survival, the other about finding and recording a wreck. Jennifer Ouellette’s November 5, 2024 Ars Technica feature reports on the documentary and its directors’ account of how they made it.
What happened to Shackleton’s crew?
Endurance became trapped in Weddell Sea pack ice by January 1915. It sank on November 21 that year. The expedition did not achieve its planned crossing of Antarctica, but all members of the crew ultimately survived.

These dates and events are reported by Ouellette’s 2024 account; they mark the difference between the expedition’s failed objective and its eventual rescue.
How did Endurance22 find the ship?
Endurance22 searched the Weddell Sea using sonar and submersibles. The team found the wreck in 2022 at a depth of 3,008 meters, roughly 6.4 kilometers south of the ship’s last recorded position, according to Ouellette’s 2024 report. The expedition used high-resolution cameras and digital reconstruction techniques to document the site.
The contrast with the earlier story is also a contrast in evidence: the crew’s diaries and Hurley’s images preserve parts of the 1914–16 expedition, while sonar and underwater imaging reveal the condition and location of the ship on the seabed.
How does the film combine archives and reenactments?
The directors drew on Frank Hurley’s photographs and moving images, including footage from his 1919 documentary South, alongside crew diaries and additional footage from later polar expeditions. Where Hurley had not filmed events, the production used reenactments, including outdoor scenes shot in Iceland and interiors filmed on a Los Angeles soundstage.
The film also uses AI voice models built from historical recordings and applied to present-day readers of the expedition text. These are recreated voices, not recordings of the people speaking during the original events. That distinction matters when watching a film that moves between authentic archival material and staged scenes.
Vasarhelyi said the diaries offered an essential way into the story: “The proper way into the Shackleton stories is through the diaries because you have primary accounts from many different points of view of the same events.”
Why does the documentary show difficult moments?
Ouellette’s feature discusses the directors’ decision to show the killing of sled dogs as a sign of the crew’s desperation. It also describes their use of color treatment on historical footage and their aim of helping viewers connect with the people visible in the archive. Those choices are the filmmakers’ explanations of how they shaped the story, rather than independent historical findings.
