The guide gives a range of 165–932 Hz and a tube length of 93 cm; these are specifications published in its instrument guide, not population measurements or study results.

For a familiar example of its solo voice, the Philharmonia points to the English horn part in Sibelius’s The Swan of Tuonela. The instrument’s color makes it suited to lyrical lines that need a rounded, expressive quality.
