Emma Stone’s given name is Emily Stone. In a 2024 interview, she said she would like fans to call her Emily, as people she works with do—but she also made clear that Emma is fine too. The comments expressed a preference, not a demand or an announcement that she had changed her professional name.
What is Emma Stone’s real name?
Vanity Fair identifies her full birth name as Emily Jean Stone; other reports refer to her given name as Emily Stone. Emma Stone is the professional name she uses publicly. Vanity Fair and the Los Angeles Times covered her 2024 comments about the name.
Does Emma Stone want people to call her Emily?
In a 2024 joint interview with her The Curse co-star Nathan Fielder, Stone said, “I would like to be Emily.” Fielder said he would call her Emily, and Stone explained that people she works with use that name once they know her. She said she would like fans to use it as well.
She immediately left room for either name: “You can say Emma. You can say anything.” The exchange was a warm statement of preference, not a complaint about being called Emma or a requirement that fans switch. The Sky News report also covered the interview.

Why does she use the professional name Emma Stone?
Stone has said she chose a different professional name because another actress was already using Emily Stone in the Screen Actors Guild. In a 2017 interview with W, as quoted by TIME, she explained: “My real name is Emily Stone, but when I started acting, that name was already taken by another actress, so I had to come up with a different one.” TIME’s account describes that naming history.
As a teenager, she first tried Riley Stone for about six months, then settled on Emma. She later recalled that hearing “Riley” called on a set did not register as her name. That practical choice of a professional name is separate from the personal reason she has given for liking Emma: she was a fan of Emma Bunton, known as Baby Spice. TIME reported that explanation.

The distinction is straightforward: Emily is her given name, Emma Stone is the name she became professionally known by, and she told interviewers that either is acceptable to her.
