The September 11 performance at UBS Arena in Elmont, New York, featured a visual callback to his 2000 VMAs appearance; Jelly Roll joined remotely for the second song.
Which songs did Eminem perform?
He performed “Houdini” first, followed by “Somebody Save Me.” The official MTV clip listing combines the songs in a single video with a runtime of 5 minutes and 18 seconds, dated September 11, 2024: MTV’s performance listing.
Both tracks are from The Death of Slim Shady (Coup de Grâce), released in July 2024. Universal Music Japan described the VMAs as the songs’ first television performances in its official recap.
How did the staging refer to Eminem’s 2000 VMAs performance?
For “Houdini,” dancers wore blonde wigs associated with Eminem’s Slim Shady look. Universal Music Japan said the staging recreated the visual approach of his 2000 VMAs performance of “The Real Slim Shady.” The connection was an intentional callback, not simply a resemblance noted after the fact.

Jelly Roll appeared virtually during “Somebody Save Me”; he was not physically onstage. ABC News reported that a tour commitment prevented him from attending in person. ABC News’ report covered his remote contribution and the event.
What awards did Eminem win that night?
Universal Music Japan’s September 13, 2024 recap reported that Eminem received eight nominations and won two awards: Best Hip-Hop Video and Best Visual Effects. These are the award results reported by the label; they are separate from the performance’s song order and staging.

MTV’s listing presents “Somebody Save Me” and “Houdini” together as one 5:18 performance clip. The official Eminem site also published a gallery from the VMAs performance on September 12, 2024.
