Eminem and Elton John’s friendship began in public, with a controversial 2001 Grammy Awards performance of “Stan.” John joined Eminem to challenge the criticism surrounding the rapper’s lyrics; years later, Eminem said he turned to John for advice when he was trying to get sober. The documented story is meaningful, but it does not support 15 separate relationship anecdotes.
Why did Eminem and Elton John perform “Stan” together?
The collaboration took place at the 2001 Grammy Awards, after Eminem’s lyrics had drawn criticism and protest. ABC News reported before the ceremony that John would perform the part associated with Dido on the album version of “Stan.” The song’s original arrangement and the live duet were therefore not identical: John took Dido’s vocal role. (ABC News, February 12, 2001)
The choice of partner carried a message. In its retrospective, the Recording Academy says Eminem invited John in part to challenge allegations made against him and to make a statement. John had publicly defended the album, saying, “I listened to the Marshall Mathers album, and I didn’t think there was anything homophobic about it. He was just talking about life.” That was John’s interpretation of the work, not proof that the lyrics caused no offense or harm. (Recording Academy, December 30, 2024)
What happened at the 2001 Grammy Awards?
The performance unfolded amid a dispute over Eminem’s lyrics. ABC News reported planned demonstrations and heightened security preparations in advance of the ceremony. The Recording Academy’s later account describes Eminem and John ending their performance with a hug and raised hands, presenting the moment as one of solidarity. That framing belongs to the Academy’s retrospective; the broader context included vocal criticism and protest. (ABC News, February 19, 2001; Recording Academy, December 30, 2024)

That phrase is reported secondhand by Nylon. In the same conversation, Eminem recalled that he was probably using drugs around the time they first met. (Nylon, December 7, 2017)
Did Elton John help Eminem get sober?
Eminem said in 2009 that he had called John when he first wanted to get sober and sought his advice. The Guardian reported that Eminem also spoke with John about career matters and felt John could relate to the pressures of the entertainment business. “Me and him have had similar lives and stuff,” Eminem said. This supports a specific, personal account: Eminem reached out to John for counsel. It does not establish that John alone caused or managed Eminem’s recovery. John’s later reflections on the partnership also appeared in coverage of his autobiography; TIME reported that John viewed Eminem’s lyrics as a persona, writing, “I thought it was obvious that his lyrics were about adopting a persona—a deliberately repugnant persona at that.” (TIME, October 15, 2019)
