Before Season 5 premiered, Lily Collins hoped Emily’s relationship with Marcello would bring her a healthier work-life balance and more uncomplicated happiness. The season ended differently: Emily chose to stay focused on her Paris career, while a postcard from Gabriel left another possibility open.
What Lily Collins hoped Emily would find with Marcello
In Netflix’s pre-release Season 5 coverage, Lily Collins said she was excited to explore Emily and Marcello’s relationship. “Marcello is a whole other adventure that we want for Emily, because we ultimately want Emily to be able to have a better work-life balance,” Collins said. She added: “We want to have Emily be able to smile without condition. We want to see her beyond her vacay mode. And he comes at that perfect time.”

Collins was describing what she hoped the relationship might offer Emily, not promising that the couple would stay together. Series creator Darren Star also saw a strong connection between them, saying before the season’s release: “I feel like they have a real spark and a real connection and a real romantic connection. A lot of that’s going to continue to play out next season.” Netflix Tudum’s Season 5 coverage also describes the season’s move between Paris, Rome, and Venice, with Emily opening a Rome office for Agence Grateau and beginning a relationship with Marcello, played by Eugenio Franceschini.
Did Emily and Marcello stay together?
No. Netflix’s recap says Emily and Marcello break up for good by the Season 5 finale. Marcello invites her to join the Muratori cashmere business, but Emily turns him down: she wants to keep pursuing her busy career in Paris rather than settle in his village. That ending contrasts with Collins’s earlier hope that Marcello might help Emily find a better balance between work and life. What Season 5 leaves open for Emily
The finale does not confirm a reunion between Emily and Gabriel. Netflix says Gabriel sends Emily a postcard inviting her to join him aboard his boss’s yacht in Greece. Whether she accepts is left as an open question, not an announced outcome for the final season.
Elsewhere, Mindy accepts Nicolas’s proposal in Venice, while Alfie makes clear that he thinks the engagement is a mistake. Netflix’s September update lists Ashley Park as returning as Mindy, Paul Forman as Nicolas, and Lucien Laviscount as Alfie. Their unresolved tensions give the final season more than one relationship to pick up.
Season 6 is the final season: release date and returning cast
Netflix confirmed that Season 6 would be the show’s final season in May 2026. Its announcement said production had started and named Greece, Monaco, and Paris as production destinations. Collins called it “the final chapter in Emily’s adventure of a lifetime.”
Netflix’s September 18, 2026 update says filming has finished and Season 6 is scheduled to arrive on December 24, 2026. The announced returning cast includes Collins as Emily; Ashley Park as Mindy; Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu as Sylvie; Samuel Arnold as Julien; Bruno Gouery as Luc; William Abadie as Antoine; Lucien Laviscount as Alfie; Minnie Driver as Princess Jane; and Paul Forman as Nicolas. Netflix has not confirmed whether Emily accepts Gabriel’s invitation.
What Netflix’s viewing figures do—and don’t—show
Netflix’s July 2026 Season 5 article reports that Season 4 earned 19.9 million views in its first four days in 2024, reached the Top 10 in 93 countries, and stayed on that list for four consecutive weeks. Those are Season 4 figures, not a measure of Season 5’s performance. The official coverage cited here does not provide a Season 5 viewership figure.
