Spoilers ahead for “Doll Day Afternoon,” Elsbeth Season 3, Episode 2. David Cross guest stars as Nolan, a hapless ex-con whose dispute over an expensive doll turns a murder investigation inside a New York toy store into a hostage standoff. The episode starts with the question of how Elsbeth will catch him, then pivots to how she can keep the crisis from getting worse.
What happens in “Doll Day Afternoon”?
“Doll Day Afternoon” aired October 16, 2025, as the second episode of Elsbeth Season 3. CBS lists its runtime as 43 minutes and its rating as TV-14. The network’s official episode page describes a murder investigation at a famous New York toy store that spirals into a hostage crisis.
Nolan, played by David Cross, has recently been released from prison for financial crimes. He wants to buy his daughter an American Girl parody doll, but the successful store owner demands thousands of dollars for it. Nolan’s daughter was kept away from him while he was incarcerated, and the confrontation over the doll ends with him killing the owner. When evidence leads Elsbeth and Officer Summerville back to the store, Elsbeth is drawn into the standoff.
The episode makes the killer’s identity clear early. Director and co-writer Robert King described its first movement as “a Columbo paradigm, and then it’s how is Elsbeth going to trap that person?” The suspense comes less from discovering who did it than from watching her navigate Nolan’s increasingly dangerous situation.

How does Elsbeth get the hostage crisis under control?
Elsbeth tries to lower the temperature by listening to Nolan and treating him with compassion, while newly introduced Captain Tully pushes toward a more aggressive response. Captain C.W. Wagner is caught between those approaches. King’s framing makes this tactical conflict central: Elsbeth’s humane negotiation offers a counterpoint to Tully’s force-forward instincts, with Wagner weighing the competing pressures.
TV Insider’s interview with King reports that Elsbeth’s quick thinking helps avert casualties. The episode’s police conflict is therefore not just background to the comedy: how the officers respond shapes whether Nolan’s poor choices lead to further harm.

Why is this one of the season’s funniest episodes?
The comedy grows from the gap between a whimsical toy-store setting and the deadly seriousness of a police standoff, as well as Nolan’s inept efforts to manage the crisis. A floor piano becomes both a visual gag and part of the tactical setup. King describes an agent rappelling from an air vent with a shoe dangling over the piano keys—a ridiculous detail inside an otherwise tense operation.
That comic business does not make “funniest episode to date” an objective fact; comedy rankings are subjective, and the episode also shifts into genuine hostage drama. A fairer description is a comedy-forward thriller, or one of the season’s funniest episodes if the toy-store absurdity and escalating mishaps are what land for you.

What does the ending mean for Nolan?
The standoff’s resolution leaves room for pity without excusing Nolan’s actions. King describes Nolan as a man who has had bad luck and also made bad choices. The final look toward Nolan’s daughter is meant to carry emotional weight: King says the scene suggests she may visit him in prison. It offers a possible thread of connection, not a reversal of the consequences of the killing.
What are the episode’s references and behind-the-scenes details?
“Dog Day Afternoon”
The title and script reference the film Dog Day Afternoon, another story organized around a botched crime and a hostage situation. The allusion signals the episode’s crime-drama framework while the toy-store setting gives it a more comic register.

Diane Lockhart
Elsbeth recommends “Diane” as a lawyer for Nolan. The reference is to Diane Lockhart, played by Christine Baranski in The Good Wife and The Good Fight. King said it was the first mention of the character, as far as he remembered. The nod rewards viewers who know those shows, but no prior King-series viewing is needed to follow this episode. CinemaBlend explains the reference.
Megaphone voices and nanny-cam bears
One voice heard through Nolan’s toy megaphone came from Matt Kregor, an editor who worked with the team on Evil; another was sped up. For the nanny-camera shots, the props team used two teddy bears: one stationary and one operated as a puppet. For the camera’s point of view, production replaced the bear with a GoPro.
