Emily Blunt was nominated for an Oscar for Oppenheimer, while co-star Cillian Murphy won Best Actor and the film took Best Picture at the 96th Academy Awards on March 10, 2024. Blunt’s interviews also explain Christopher Nolan’s unusually relaxed set. The “Cillian Murphy cosplay” wording, however, does not point to a verified Murphy costume appearance in the available reporting; the documented cosplay connection is the recognizable hat worn by his character, J. Robert Oppenheimer.

- Cillian Murphy won Actor in a Leading Role for Oppenheimer.
- Emily Blunt was nominated for Actress in a Supporting Role for Oppenheimer.
- Oppenheimer won Best Picture.
Blunt did not win the supporting-actress award; Da’Vine Joy Randolph won that category. The Academy Press Office’s pre-ceremony announcement said the broadcast was scheduled for ABC and planned for more than 200 territories worldwide. That was a planned broadcast reach, not a viewership figure.
What Emily Blunt said about making Oppenheimer
Nolan removed the sense of ceremony
In a British Film Institute interview, Blunt described Christopher Nolan’s working style as deliberately informal: “He wants to just take all this sense of ceremony out of it. So everything’s very casual, conversational, private, intimate. It’s very understated, and it takes the edge off your panic.”

#1 Best Overall
Her description suggests a set designed to reduce performance pressure rather than amplify the film’s historical scale. It is a comment about the atmosphere of production, not a claim that the shoot lacked discipline or preparation.
The cast knew the project was unusual, not how large it would become
Blunt also separated the cast’s early instinct from the film’s eventual cultural and awards impact: “I don’t think we knew to what extent the film would take the world by storm, but I think you just know you’re a part of something rare.” The remark is hindsight about the project’s distinctiveness, not a prediction of its box office or Oscar haul.
The oral-history perspective
A Vanity Fair oral history published January 19, 2024 brought Blunt, Murphy and Robert Downey Jr. together to discuss the making of Oppenheimer. Anthony Breznican conducted the interview. It provides a shared cast perspective, whereas the BFI conversation gives a concise account of Nolan’s set and Blunt’s own experience.
What does “Cillian Murphy cosplay” mean here?
The available reporting does not identify a specific convention appearance, social-media post, fan, event or reaction involving Murphy in cosplay. It would therefore be inaccurate to say that Murphy wore a costume or responded to one. The defensible adjacent subject is Oppenheimer cosplay: recreating the character’s visual language, especially his hat.

Why the Oppenheimer hat became a cosplay shorthand
A distinctive silhouette
Costume-design reporting identifies Oppenheimer’s hat as a popular cosplay and Halloween item. It has a pork-pie-like crown, an irregular crease and a broad brim. The shape was informed by historical imagery, but the designer’s source photographs did not establish the hat’s original color or materials.
A prop designed for movement
Costume designer Ellen Mirojnick explained the practical requirement: “The hat needed to be flipped up, flipped down. It needed to be many different things.” That functional brief helps explain why the screen hat reads as character design rather than a perfectly documented historical replica.

What the production involved
The same Los Angeles Times costume-design reporting, republished by the Yonkers Observer in 2024, attributed three production figures to the film: 1,000 costumes, a 180-page script and 73 speaking parts. Those numbers describe the scale of the production; they are not audience or box-office statistics.

You do not need a complete screen-accurate wardrobe to signal the character. Start with the hat, then build a restrained period silhouette around it.

- Choose the hat shape. Look for a brown felt, period-style or pork-pie-shaped hat with a broad brim, an irregular crown crease and enough flexibility to turn the brim up or down.
- Check the seller’s claim. Distinguish a generic period hat from an item claiming to be a screen replica. The available costume reporting does not authenticate any commercial listing as an exact replica.
- Prioritize fit. Measure your head and compare that measurement with the seller’s size range; brim width and crown height change the silhouette more than a nominal “Oppenheimer” label.
- Add understated clothing. Use a conservative suit or period-inspired jacket, shirt and tie in muted colors. The goal is a historically suggestive outline, not a claim to reproduce every garment.
- Use the hat as the visual anchor. Compare crown silhouette, brim flexibility, material, color and fit in photographs before buying. Those details are more useful than an unsupported “official” or “screen-used” description.
Mirojnick’s comments about Kitty Oppenheimer offer a useful broader costume principle. She said Kitty “had resigned herself to giving over her ambition to him” and described assembling possible clothing choices for Blunt to select from. Her summary was: “There’s a fine line between naturalness and a costume.” Those remarks belong to the costume designer’s interpretation of Kitty, not to Blunt’s account of cosplay.
What is established—and what is not
| Question | What the published record establishes |
|---|---|
| Did Emily Blunt win an Oscar for Oppenheimer? | No. She was nominated for supporting actress; Da’Vine Joy Randolph won. |
| Did Cillian Murphy win? | Yes. He won Actor in a Leading Role. |
| Did the film win Best Picture? | Yes. |
| Did Murphy appear at a documented cosplay event or wear cosplay? | Not established by the cited reporting. |
| Is the hat an exact historical replica? | Not established. The source photographs did not reveal the original color and materials. |
The Bottom Line
Oppenheimer made Emily Blunt an Oscar nominee, Cillian Murphy an Oscar winner and the film a Best Picture winner. For cosplay, the reliable takeaway is the character’s flexible, broad-brimmed hat—not an unverified story about Murphy attending or reacting to a cosplay event.
