After police reported an alleged plan to steal his body, security concerns prompted his family to move Elvis and his mother, Gladys, to Graceland’s Meditation Garden in October 1977. The reported crime was not proven in court: charges against three men were dismissed after a prosecutor said the city could not vouch for its key witness’s truthfulness.
Where was Elvis first buried?
Elvis died at Graceland in Memphis on August 16, 1977, aged 42, according to Graceland’s official FAQ. Two days later, after private services at Graceland, he was interred in the mausoleum at Forest Hill Cemetery. A contemporaneous Washington Post account described the procession and burial.

Did someone really try to steal Elvis’s body?
Memphis police reported an alleged body-theft plot in late August 1977. An Associated Press report published August 29 said four men had been arrested outside the cemetery. The report also noted that police would not confirm some claims circulating at the time, including details about explosives or whether suspects had entered the cemetery.
That distinction matters: an arrest and a police announcement do not prove that a crime was planned exactly as described. A secondary chronology reproducing accounts attributed to The Commercial Appeal says three men were charged with criminal trespassing in connection with the purported scheme. In October, the charges were dismissed after the prosecutor said the city could not vouch for the key witness’s truthfulness. The case therefore did not establish the sensational details as fact.

Accounts of the episode have included specific claims about a ransom, methods, and the identity or role of alleged planners. Those details remain uncertain in the records cited here. A 2025 Daily Memphian excerpt, for example, attributes a reported $2 million offer to Raymond “Bubba” Green’s own telling; it does not independently establish that such an offer was made. There is no reliable basis in these records to present a successful theft, a proven conspiracy, or family orchestration as fact.
Why was Elvis moved to Graceland?
The move is well documented; its security rationale is stated by the National Park Service in Graceland’s National Historic Landmark nomination: “After his death, security issues at Forest Hill Cemetery, his original burial site, led to his reburial in October 1977 on the south side of the pool with fountains.” Graceland likewise says Elvis and his mother were buried in the Meditation Garden that October.

The alleged plot helps explain the concern, but it should not be mistaken for a proven successful robbery. The supported account is that security problems at Forest Hill led the family to move the graves to Graceland.
When were Elvis and Gladys buried at Graceland?
Elvis and his mother, Gladys, were reburied together in the Meditation Garden in October 1977. Gladys’s original headstone was kept in Graceland’s archives from 1977. Graceland says it was placed in the Meditation Garden on August 14, 2018, the 60th anniversary of her death.
