Elvis Presley Enterprises’ exhibition materials also describe his slicked-back hair and black mascara. His style shifted over the decades; the prosthetics used to portray him in the 2022 film are a separate part of the story, and the available sources do not establish whether Elvis had tattoos.
Was Elvis Presley naturally blonde?
Yes, according to Angie Marchese, vice president of Archives and Exhibits at Elvis Presley Enterprises. In a recorded Graceland tour, Marchese said Elvis was born blonde with blue eyes and began dyeing his hair black after his first movie, Love Me Tender. She explained that he thought the darker color brought out his facial features better on film. This is Marchese’s account, not a quoted statement from Elvis himself.

Did Elvis wear makeup?
Elvis Presley Enterprises’ 2023 Direct from Graceland: Elvis exhibition press release describes him with slicked-back hair and black mascara, presenting those details as part of his carefully crafted public appearance. The description supports saying that mascara was part of the look; it does not identify a brand or establish a particular daily cosmetic routine.
Director Baz Luhrmann has also said Elvis experimented with makeup and hair color in high school. That is Luhrmann’s characterization, rather than independently verified documentation of a specific makeup practice.

How did Elvis’s style change through his career?
The exhibition material offers broad visual markers rather than a complete wardrobe history:
| Era | Appearance described in the exhibition material |
|---|---|
| 1950s | Softer trousers and argyle socks |
| 1968 | The leather-rocker image |
| 1970s | Flamboyant, embellished stage styling |
These snapshots show how the image associated with Elvis evolved, from early fashion details to the leather look and more elaborate stage costumes. They should be read as era markers, not as an exhaustive account of what he wore.

Did Elvis have tattoos?
The sources reviewed do not establish whether Elvis had tattoos. A generic FBI identification form includes a field for “Scars, Marks, Tattoo, etc.,” but the existence of that form field is not evidence that Elvis personally had a tattoo. It would be inaccurate to treat the available material as proof either that he did or that he did not.

Yes. The 2022 Elvis production notes say Austin Butler portrayed Elvis from age 17 to 42 and wore prosthetic variations to suggest changes in age and physique. The notes single out the heavier final-concert look, which took close to five hours to apply. That figure describes a film makeup application, not Elvis’s historical grooming.

How was Colonel Tom Parker’s transformation different?
Tom Hanks’s portrayal of Colonel Tom Parker involved a separate set of effects: multiple age looks, wigs, prosthetic teeth, age and sun spots, and extensive prosthetics for Parker’s final elderly appearance. The production notes say the older Parker makeup took around five hours to apply. These effects belong to Hanks’s transformation, not Butler’s portrayal of Elvis.
