Elvis Presley’s peanut butter sandwich is commonly published as a fried peanut-butter-and-banana sandwich: ripe banana and peanut butter on white bread, cooked in butter until golden. The Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery’s one-sandwich version uses one small banana, three tablespoons of peanut butter, and two tablespoons of butter.
Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery version
The National Portrait Gallery reproduces this recipe from Brenda Arlene Butler’s Are You Hungry Tonight? Its recipe reference lists the author’s name as Brenda Arline Butler and the book as a 1992 publication. The recipe makes one sandwich.
Ingredients
- 1 small ripe banana
- 2 slices white bread
- 3 tablespoons peanut butter
- 2 tablespoons butter
Method
- Mash the banana in a small bowl with the back of a spoon.
- Lightly toast the bread.
- Spread peanut butter on one slice and mashed banana on the other, then close the sandwich.
- Melt the butter in a pan or skillet and fry the sandwich until both sides are golden brown. The Gallery’s instruction is: “Fry the sandwich in melted butter until each side is golden brown.”
- Cut diagonally and serve hot.
How published versions differ
There is no single formula established by these published accounts. Nigella Lawson’s one-serving adaptation uses less peanut butter than the Gallery version, while a 1990 Los Angeles Times report attributes a larger-batch recipe to Elvis’s personal cook Mary Jenkins.

The differences matter: the Gallery recipe uses three tablespoons of peanut butter for one small banana, Lawson uses two scant tablespoons for one medium banana, and the Jenkins account combines a larger quantity of peanut butter and banana. These are separate published versions associated with Elvis, not evidence that their proportions or techniques match.
