Elton John has said he lost sight in his right eye after an eye infection and that vision in his left eye was also impaired. In a November 2025 interview, he described the effects on reading, watching television and seeing his sons play sports as devastating. The accounts are his and his husband David Furnish’s; they do not establish a specific diagnosis beyond the infection and reported retinal damage, or a definitive prognosis.
What happened to Elton John’s eyesight?
John contracted an eye infection while vacationing in France in summer 2024, according to his public account reported by Variety. In September 2024, he said the infection had left him with limited vision in one eye and that healing was extremely slow, as reported by the Associated Press.
By a November 2025 interview with Variety, John said he had lost sight in his right eye and that his left eye was “not so good.” Furnish said the right retina had been damaged. That description comes from Furnish, not an independent clinical report.
How has the vision loss affected him?
John has spoken about losing everyday visual experiences as well as the ability to follow his work. In April 2025, he told The Guardian: “I can’t read. I can’t see my boys playing rugby and soccer, and it has been a very stressful time because I’m used to soaking it all up. It’s distressing.”

In the November interview, he described the preceding 15 months as challenging: “It’s been devastating,” he says. “Because I lost my right eye and my left eye’s not so good, the last 15 months have been challenging for me because I haven’t been able to see anything, watch anything, read anything.”
What has John said about treatment and recovery?
In September 2024, John wrote that he was healing but that the process was extremely slow and that it would take time before sight returned to the impacted eye. The AP reported those remarks from his Instagram post. In December, he also said he struggled to see The Devil Wears Prada, the stage musical for which he wrote the score: “So it’s hard for me to see it, but I love to hear it and, boy, it sounded good tonight.”

In November 2025, Furnish said John had been receiving treatments and that there had been some improvement in the left eye: “We’ve been doing some treatments and there’s been some improvements in his left eye, which is really good, and we’re continuing to explore and getting a lot of outreach from a lot of doctors who want to help and support.” John expressed hope while avoiding a promise about the outcome: “I’ve just gotta be patient that someday science will help me with this one.”

The public accounts describe an eye infection, severe loss of vision in the right eye, impaired vision in the left, and Furnish’s report of right-retina damage and some improvement in the left eye during treatment. The accounts are dated: Furnish’s comments describe the situation at the time of the November 2025 interview, not necessarily John’s current vision.
