What happens in “Poetic Justice”
CBS’s synopsis says a donor’s death shakes New York’s nonprofit arts scene. Elsbeth investigates the motives of the victim’s friend, Gary, who founded a prominent poetry journal. The setup puts questions of friendship and motive alongside the world of arts funding, but the official synopsis does not say what Elsbeth discovers or how the case ends. CBS’s episode page provides the network’s description.

Who William Jackson Harper plays
Harper guest-stars as Gary, the founding director of a New York City poetry journal called Pidgeon Print. TV Insider’s preview adds that Gary is desperate for funding, a detail that gives the arts-world setting a concrete source of pressure. Neither that preview nor CBS’s short synopsis confirms a villainous turn, identifies a culprit, or describes an arrest. TV Insider’s preview identifies Harper’s character and the journal.
Marissa Gold’s return
The episode’s second thread brings back Marissa Gold, played by Sarah Steele. CBS describes her as Elsbeth’s old friend and says she is working as campaign manager for a mayoral candidate, following in her father Eli’s footsteps. TV Insider identifies Marissa as Eli Gold’s daughter and reports that Carrie Preston described her as “smart, savvy, mercurial, fast-paced”; Preston also said Elsbeth is thrilled to see her friend again. The campaign storyline is a separate thread from the donor-death investigation.
