Spoilers ahead for “Unalive and Well.” CBS officially titled Season 2, Episode 9 “Unalive and Well,” and aired it on January 30, 2025. The episode follows Elsbeth as she investigates the death of Cole Campbell, whose stay at a holistic wellness center leads her to its charismatic founder—and a cover-up tied to an earlier death.

Episode details

  • Official title: “Unalive and Well” (the episode is sometimes referred to by the recap headline “The Hideaway From Hell”).
  • Season and episode: Season 2, Episode 9.
  • Air date: January 30, 2025.
  • Runtime and rating: 43 minutes; TV-14 L.

CBS’s Season 2 guide lists the episode as “Unalive and Well.” Its synopsis reads: “When a young man is found dead in his car, Elsbeth visits the holistic wellness center he’d just left and begins to suspect its charismatic founder.”

Who killed Cole Campbell?

Tom, the founder of the Heiwa Zen Center, killed Cole by exploiting his sesame allergy. The detailed recap says Tom used a needle to contaminate Cole’s snacks with mustard-seed oil. Elsbeth connects the center’s talk of seed cycling to mustard and sesame, then identifies the food and needle as evidence that points to Tom.

The episode’s investigation begins after Cole leaves the center, crashes his car and is found dead. Among the clues Elsbeth, Kaya and Detective Smullen examine are Cole’s swollen face, an emptied drink pouch with its straw opening intact, an EpiPen and a GPS route toward a diagnostic center. These details help Elsbeth see that the crash is not the whole story.

What happened at the Heiwa Zen Center?

Cole first checked into the center using the name Billy. He later revealed his identity and confronted Tom about his sister June, who had become ill at the center years earlier. The recap says Tom administered kambo instead of taking June to a hospital, and that Cole was trying to document Tom’s renewed use of the substance despite a settlement provision.

That history gives Cole a reason to challenge Tom, while the present-day evidence reveals how the founder turns the center’s wellness language into cover for a crime. The kambo and allergy elements are part of the episode’s fictional plot, not medical guidance.

Why are Elsbeth and Kaya at odds?

Alongside the murder investigation, Elsbeth faces workplace pressure after a newspaper exposes her past role in a divorce case involving allegations of domestic abuse. Kaya is upset when Elsbeth confirms she participated, but Elsbeth will not discuss privileged details of the case.

The strain starts to ease when Elsbeth asks Kaya for help and Kaya agrees, on the condition that Elsbeth tell her more about the Chicago case. Their exchange pushes the partnership toward reconciliation without erasing the trust issue between them.

What happens with Judge Crawford?

In a separate thread, Wagner spots a baseball inconsistency that gives him grounds to challenge Judge Crawford’s handling of an earlier case. He asks Captain Kearnshaw to reopen it, keeping the broader Crawford storyline active while Elsbeth’s team closes in on Tom.
