That makes the comparison to Columbo apt—but the series is a comic, character-led procedural in its own right, not a remake.
Is Elsbeth a Good Wife spinoff?
Yes, in the sense that Carrie Preston plays the same Elsbeth Tascioni who appeared in The Good Wife and The Good Fight. The new series carries that character into a different kind of show: rather than centering on legal cases and courtroom maneuvering, it makes her the lead of a New York murder procedural.
Elsbeth arrives in New York in connection with oversight of the NYPD. CBS describes her as a consent-decree attorney working with the department. That role gives her a reason to encounter cases and investigate them, while the weekly mystery—not a courtroom fight—drives each episode. The Los Angeles Times reports that co-creator Robert King sees a spinoff as a continuation of a world; he also describes Elsbeth as a different genre and tone from the earlier legal dramas. Preston played Elsbeth 19 times across the two earlier series, according to the Associated Press. AP also reports that she won the guest-actress Emmy for the role in 2013. The character’s appeal was already clear: her free-associative manner can make her seem distracted, but she is quietly alert to what other people miss. Associated Press

How the murder-first format works
Elsbeth often shows viewers the crime or the perpetrator before Elsbeth enters the investigation. Mystery writers call this an inverted mystery, or a “howcatchem”: the main question is not simply who did it, but how the detective will spot the evidence, expose the lie, and establish what happened. KQED describes the early episodes as beginning with a murder and bringing Elsbeth to the scene afterward; the Washington Post uses the term “howcatchem” for the approach. KQED · Washington Post
That structure shifts suspense away from a last-minute identity reveal. The audience watches the suspect’s confidence meet Elsbeth’s curiosity, and waits for the small inconsistency that turns suspicion into a case. Preston has described the practical demands of the format: “We are doing a procedural, so the writing does have to honor the case of the week (format),” she told AP.

Why Columbo is the closest comparison—and where it stops
The resemblance is structural. Like Columbo, Elsbeth frequently introduces the culprit early and makes the pleasure of the episode watching an underestimated detective work toward proof. Co-creator Robert King told AP that the team recognized the fun in “him being underestimated and him kind of not being able to control how smart he was.” The Los Angeles Times reports that showrunner Jonathan Tolins studied both Columbo and Poker Face while shaping the series. The comparison should not flatten the differences. Elsbeth’s comic, exuberant way of moving through a room is distinct from Columbo’s rumpled, dogged persona; the series also uses New York as a rotating backdrop for cases and guest characters. The recurring guest suspect is part of the format’s pleasure, but the show’s identity rests heavily on Preston’s performance and on the contrast between her character’s offbeat presentation and her exacting attention.

Poker Face is another useful reference point because it also builds episodes around a crime the viewer may understand before the central investigator does. But these are comparisons, not claims that the shows share a premise or are interchangeable. A viewer deciding whether Elsbeth suits them can ask what they want from a weekly mystery: a puzzle whose solution is hidden, the satisfaction of watching a detective prove what the audience already knows, or a sustained story that develops across episodes.
What critics praise—and what they question
Reviews have differed on whether the show’s lightness is an asset or a limitation. KQED’s David Bianculli emphasizes the pleasure of Preston’s performance and the murder-first construction. The Washington Post’s Lili Loofbourow praises the character, jokes, guest stars, and clear episodic cases, while finding the continuing story less persuasive. She also questions whether a fanciful mystery can sit comfortably beside the real-world context of NYPD oversight. That is a tonal criticism, not a claim that the premise itself documents department practice.

Lucy Mangan’s Guardian review is more negative, calling the weekly mysteries obvious and the show tedious. Those judgments point to a real dividing line: if the main appeal is seeing a familiar detective charm her way to a solution, the formula can feel efficient; if a viewer wants intricate misdirection or a weightier treatment of institutions, the same lightness may frustrate.
