Elsbeth stars Carrie Preston as Elsbeth Tascioni, with Wendell Pierce as Captain C.W. Wagner and Carra Patterson as Kaya Blanke. The CBS procedural follows Elsbeth, an unconventional attorney working in an NYPD investigative role. Tascioni originated in The Good Wife, returned in The Good Fight, and became the lead of Elsbeth.

| Wendell Pierce | Captain C.W. Wagner | Elsbeth’s boss and the leader of the NYPD’s 11th Precinct. |

Is Elsbeth a spin-off of The Good Wife?
Yes, in character and franchise terms. It is best described as a series based on Elsbeth Tascioni, the character Carrie Preston first played in The Good Wife and later reprised in The Good Fight. Preston’s Elsbeth moves from a successful legal career in Chicago to a New York investigative assignment with the NYPD; she is not portrayed as having become a police officer. CBS explicitly identifies the connection, while Paramount+’s cast guide notes that the character became the lead of Elsbeth in 2024.
The series uses a case-of-the-week structure. Elsbeth’s observations and instincts help the precinct pursue murder cases, while Wagner represents the department’s institutional authority and Kaya provides a practical police partner.

Elsbeth Tascioni — Carrie Preston
Carrie Preston’s Elsbeth is the show’s central character and its link to the earlier CBS legal dramas. She is an astute but unconventional attorney whose consent-decree work places her alongside the NYPD in an investigative capacity. Her unusual way of reading people and situations drives the procedural mystery format: each episode follows a new murder investigation while Elsbeth tests what she sees against police evidence and procedure.
Preston originated the role in The Good Wife, continued it in The Good Fight, and now carries the character as the lead of Elsbeth. CBS’s official description is the clearest source for both the premise and the franchise relationship.

Captain C.W. Wagner — Wendell Pierce
Wendell Pierce plays Captain C.W. Wagner, Elsbeth’s boss and the leader of the 11th Precinct. Wagner is the senior police figure responsible for the precinct in which Elsbeth works, making him her principal institutional counterpart. The sources identify him as “Captain C.W. Wagner”; they do not provide an expansion of the initials.
Kaya Blanke — Carra Patterson
Carra Patterson plays Kaya Blanke. At the series launch, Kaya is an NYPD officer partnered with Elsbeth. The official premiere release characterizes her as stoic and ethical, with an appreciation for Elsbeth’s insights developing over time.

What happens to Kaya?
Paramount+’s guide gives Kaya’s later career changes season-two context: she is promoted to detective and accepts a special task-force position in Washington, D.C. That development should not be described as a death, a permanent write-out, or proof that she cannot appear later. The guide does not provide a definitive complete season-four billing list. See Paramount+’s cast guide for the season-one and season-two details.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How many seasons of Elsbeth are there?
The current CBS listing accessed on September 30, 2026, displays three seasons and says that Elsbeth returns for season four. The CBS About page displays an October 8 premiere date without a year on the line shown there, so that date should not be assigned a year from that page alone. Season-specific cast billing can change; Preston and Pierce are established in the cited current material, while a complete season-four regular-cast list is not supplied by these sources. CBS’s current series listing is the appropriate place to verify the latest status.
Where to watch Elsbeth
New episodes air on CBS and stream on Paramount+. Paramount+’s November 21, 2025 cast guide described live streaming on Paramount+ Premium and next-day on-demand access on any Paramount+ plan at that time. Plans, regional rights and catalog availability can change, so verify the current offering with CBS or Paramount+ before watching.
Who created Elsbeth?
Robert King and Michelle King created the story. The official premiere release credits Robert King, Michelle King, Jonathan Tolins and Liz Glotzer as executive producers, with Tolins serving as showrunner. Paramount Press Express provides the production credits.
