A few hours later, he reposted a video whose caption was contradicted by an X Community Note, according to Futurism’s account. The sequence is striking, but the available reporting does not establish that Musk knew the caption was false when he shared it.
What happened?
Victor Tangermann reported in Futurism on July 30, 2024, that Musk first endorsed a meme reading: “If you ever feel dumb, just remember there are some people who still believe everything shown in [sic] news.” Musk replied, “yup.” A few hours later, at 3:42 a.m., he reposted a video from Visegrád 24 with the caption, “This is messed up.” Futurism’s account of the episode is the source for the posts and their reported sequence.
What did the Venezuela video claim, and what did the note say?
Visegrád 24 described the video as showing “armed communist Maduro gangs ‘Colectivos’ are now storming polling stations in Punta Cardón,” Venezuela. Futurism reported that an X Community Note soon disputed that description. As quoted in the article, the note said: “Those are thieves stealing air conditioners and a woman can be heard in the video saying so,” and added that Venezuelan voting used small computers unlike those visible in the clip.
That is the distinction the available account supports: the post’s caption described an attack on a polling station; the note said the footage showed theft of air-conditioning units. The reporting reviewed here does not include a forensic examination of the video or an independently preserved record of the original post, so it cannot establish those details beyond Futurism’s reporting and its quotation of the note.

Did Musk correct or delete the post?
Futurism reported that Musk quietly deleted the repost and did not acknowledge the mistake there. The account does not establish why he deleted it or whether he had seen the Community Note before doing so. It therefore supports saying the shared claim was challenged and the post was later removed—not that Musk knowingly spread a false account.
How does this fit Musk’s later criticism of news media?
The incident occurred in July 2024. A separate analysis by Reporters Without Borders (RSF), published October 16, 2025, examined Musk’s X activity from September 2024 through September 2025. RSF counted 1,017 posts it classified as hostile to media over those 365 days—nearly three a day—and said more than one-third of the posts it analyzed suggested that media misinform the public. Those are RSF’s classifications for a later period, not measurements of the July 2024 incident or an audit of journalism’s accuracy. RSF’s analysis and methodology context should be read on those terms.

RSF’s interpretation is that Musk’s posts weaken trust in the press and position X as an information source. That is the organization’s assessment of a pattern, not evidence of Musk’s motive in this individual repost. The July episode is more narrowly useful as an illustration of how a viral video caption can be challenged by context attached to the post—and of why the challenge and the underlying footage should not be treated as interchangeable evidence.
