On January 20, 2025, Elon Musk made a straight-arm gesture while speaking at a post-inauguration celebration for Donald Trump at Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C. The movement drew widespread comparisons to a Nazi salute, but the available reporting does not establish what Musk intended. The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) described it as an awkward gesture in a moment of enthusiasm, while the Associated Press reported that far-right extremists celebrated it.

What happened at the Trump celebration?

Musk spoke to the crowd at Capital One Arena on January 20, 2025, during a post-inauguration event. He thanked attendees for helping elect Trump and made a straight-arm movement that viewers and news coverage compared to a Nazi salute. The basic event and the gesture are not the central dispute; the disagreement is over how to interpret it.

Contemporaneous coverage from Reuters and the Associated Press described the gesture and the comparisons it prompted. An AP Archive video report also covered the event and reactions.

Why did people interpret the gesture differently?

The visible movement and public reaction

The straight-arm form prompted comparisons to a Nazi salute. That resemblance explains the controversy, but resemblance and interpretation do not by themselves establish the speaker’s intent.

The ADL’s response

The ADL publicly characterized the movement as an awkward gesture in a moment of enthusiasm, rather than a Nazi salute. Its statement, reproduced by AP, said: “It seems that @elonmusk made an awkward gesture in a moment of enthusiasm, not a Nazi salute, but again, we appreciate that people are on edge.” The organization also urged people to give one another grace and the benefit of the doubt.

Extremist reactions and uncertainty about intent

In its January 21 report, AP said right-wing extremists had celebrated the gesture. That reaction is relevant to how the moment was amplified, but it does not establish that Musk shared those groups’ views or meant to signal agreement with them. AP also reported that Musk’s intention was not totally clear.

What is known about Musk’s intent?

The cited reports establish the setting, the visible gesture, and the sharply different public responses. They do not establish Musk’s private intent or provide an independent finding that resolves it. It is therefore more accurate to say that the gesture appeared to some viewers to resemble a Nazi salute, while the ADL interpreted it as an awkward enthusiastic movement, than to present either interpretation as proven fact.

What happened after the event?

NPR reported on January 23, with an update on January 24, that Musk posted Nazi-themed puns on X as debate about the gesture continued. Those later posts formed part of the wider controversy, but they are subsequent conduct and do not, on their own, prove what he intended during the January 20 speech. NPR’s report covers that follow-up.
