Six former employees of The Ellen DeGeneres Show told Rolling Stone reporter Krystie Lee Yandoli that Ellen DeGeneres’s 2024 Netflix special For Your Approval failed to acknowledge their experiences of the show’s workplace culture. The phrase “missed the mark” is one anonymous former employee’s judgment, not a verdict by the publication or an established finding about the special.
What is the special, and what did former staffers say?
For Your Approval is a one-hour stand-up routine taped at Minneapolis’s Orpheum Theater. It began streaming on Netflix on September 24, 2024. In a report published September 28, 2024, six former employees spoke anonymously to Rolling Stone about their reactions to the special.
The employees’ central criticism was that DeGeneres’s treatment of the controversy blurred unpleasant behavior with more serious workplace allegations, leaving their own experiences unacknowledged. One former employee characterized the special as having “missed the mark.” The report also describes the concern as the special continuing to invalidate or deny those experiences. Those are anonymous sources’ assessments, not findings independently adjudicated in the article.
Why did the jokes land differently for them?
The disagreement was about more than whether individual jokes were funny. For former employees who believed their experiences had been minimized, jokes about the controversy could come across as dismissive or as punching down rather than as an answer to what they said happened at work.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Still, their reactions were not unanimous. Most of the former employees quoted thought the material did not land or punched down, while some liked particular jokes, including one about whether a mean person could dance up stairs. The account therefore presents a range of responses, not a single shared verdict on the comedy.
What workplace history does the report describe?
The former employees’ responses sit within the history of the show’s workplace controversy. Yandoli’s report says allegations published in 2020 prompted an internal investigation at the show and that three producers were fired afterward. These are historical details as recounted in the report; the former employees’ statements remain attributed allegations and opinions, not proof that every allegation was established.

The Ellen DeGeneres Show ended in 2022 after 19 seasons, according to the same report. It also says For Your Approval fulfilled a reported two-special Netflix deal. These details explain the timing and context of the special, but do not determine whether its material succeeded for viewers.

The report documents how six former employees interpreted the special in light of their experiences. It does not establish that every former employee shared their views, nor does it turn anonymous sources’ accounts into a formal ruling on the show’s workplace or the special’s intent. Its “missed the mark” wording should be understood as one former employee’s characterization, as reported by Yandoli.

For readers assessing the dispute, it helps to keep three perspectives distinct: DeGeneres’s self-presentation in the stand-up special, the former employees’ accounts of workplace culture, and the report’s summary of the investigation and show’s ending. The criticism centers on the gap between the special’s framing and how those employees say they experienced the workplace, even as their reactions to particular jokes varied.
