Elle Macpherson disclosed in 2024 that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer in 2017—seven years earlier. She described declining chemotherapy and choosing what she called a holistic approach; her account is a personal health story, not evidence that this approach treats cancer.

What Macpherson said happened

In a September 2024 interview with The Australian Women’s Weekly and in her memoir, Elle: Life, Lessons, and Learning to Trust Yourself, Macpherson spoke publicly about her diagnosis for the first time. She described the news as “a shock, it was unexpected, it was confusing, it was daunting in so many ways.”

Macpherson said she took several weeks to consider her options and consulted 32 doctors and experts. That number is her reported account, not an independently audited count. She also said she came to believe that “there was no sure thing and absolutely no guarantees.”

She said she spent eight months in Arizona following an approach she described as “intuitive, heart-led, holistic.” The duration and description come from contemporaneous coverage; they do not establish that the approach caused a health outcome.

What diagnosis and treatment recommendations were reported

A 2024 account in The Australian Women’s Weekly described Macpherson’s diagnosis as HER2-positive, estrogen-receptor-positive ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS), following a lumpectomy. The report said doctors recommended mastectomy, radiation, chemotherapy, hormone therapy, and reconstruction. These details are media reporting, not a review of her medical records.

Macpherson said she declined chemotherapy. The treatments reported as recommended and the approach she said she chose are not interchangeable options, and her account does not establish that one would be suitable for another person. Her memoir is a personal account, not a medical guide.

What she said about remission—and what that tells us

In 2024 coverage, Macpherson described herself as being in “clinical remission.” That was a statement about her status at the time of those interviews; it does not verify her health in 2026 or establish what caused the reported outcome.

Macpherson said, “It’s not about giving advice to others.” That distinction matters, but a celebrity’s personal experience can still be mistaken for treatment guidance. The Guardian’s 2024 coverage summarized Cancer Research UK as saying there is no scientific or medical evidence that alternative therapies can cure cancer. It also noted that some complementary therapies may help people feel better, while others can be harmful or interfere with conventional cancer treatment.

In an October 2024 ABC News transcript, oncologist Professor Fran Boyle warned that some people might conclude from Macpherson’s story that an alternative approach had cured her cancer. Boyle’s concern was about how the story could be interpreted; it was not an assessment of Macpherson’s individual medical outcome.

Where to read Macpherson’s account

Macpherson’s memoir is titled Elle: Life, Lessons, and Learning to Trust Yourself. Penguin Books Australia lists the book in hardback, ebook, and audiobook editions, with a 2024 publication date and ISBN 9781761344008. The book presents her own account; it should not be treated as guidance for making cancer-treatment decisions.
