The exchange was pointed, but it did not establish that a holistic approach treats cancer—or that Macpherson’s choices would suit another patient.
What happened in Elle Macpherson’s interview with Karl Stefanovic?
Macpherson appeared on Today with Stefanovic and fill-in co-host Amelia Adams to discuss her new book. In a PerthNow report published on 9 September 2024, she objected that coverage of her cancer-treatment decision was eclipsing other parts of the memoir.
Macpherson objected to the focus on cancer
“The book isn’t about cancer. And the focus on it is really distorted,” Macpherson said, as quoted by PerthNow. Her point was about the interview’s emphasis: she wanted the memoir discussed more broadly, rather than having her treatment decision dominate its coverage.
Stefanovic described a wider public debate
Stefanovic replied: “I know, but you’ve found yourself in the middle of a debate that I think so many women are having with not just the community, but with the conventional medical profession.” That was his characterization of the public discussion, not a medical assessment of Macpherson’s care.

Macpherson explained her decision this way: “I just made a decision based on all the information that I gathered and what felt right for me.” The exchange was tense because the two were emphasizing different things: Macpherson’s account of a personal choice and the broader significance Stefanovic saw in the public response.
What did Macpherson say about her cancer treatment?
Nine’s report described Macpherson as sharing her experience, not advising other people with cancer to make the same choice. ABC News reported that she said she declined chemotherapy and chose what she called a “heart-led, holistic approach.” These are accounts of her own decision; they do not demonstrate that the approach was effective or appropriate for another person.

Her account also does not provide a complete clinical record. PerthNow and Nine reported that she had sought medical opinions and encountered differing views, but the public reports do not set out her full records or establish precisely what each clinician recommended.
What is the health distinction behind the debate?
Complementary practices are not the same as replacement treatment
ABC Radio National’s Health Report, presented by Norman Swan, drew a distinction between complementary practices used alongside cancer care and alternative therapies used instead of medical treatment. That distinction matters: a person may use supportive practices in addition to care from an oncology team, but a claim that an alternative approach can replace cancer treatment requires evidence of its own.

What Cancer Council warned about
ABC News quoted Cancer Council warning: “Alternative therapies are often promoted as ‘cancer cures’, but they are unproven and have not been scientifically tested. They may cause harm or suffering to those who use them instead of conventional medical treatments.” This is a general caution about unproven therapies used as substitutes; it is not a review of Macpherson’s individual care.
What is publicly known about Macpherson’s diagnosis—and what is not?
A Guardian report published on 4 September 2024 said Macpherson had a lumpectomy and described her diagnosis as HER2-positive, oestrogen-receptive intraductal carcinoma. The Guardian also noted that key details—including the lesion’s size and grade and other risk factors—were not available in the media accounts it reviewed.

Breast surgeon Professor Chris Pyke told the Guardian that treatment decisions can depend on factors such as the area affected, cell grade and additional risk information. The missing details mean that readers cannot use public celebrity coverage to determine Macpherson’s individual prognosis or judge which treatment plan was appropriate for her. Nor does one person’s reported outcome predict the course of disease in another patient. The Health Report discussed ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS), but its population-level commentary should not be mistaken for Macpherson’s personal odds.

ABC’s later 7.30 investigation examined wellness practitioner Simone Laubscher and the qualifications she represented. That reporting concerned Laubscher’s credentials and included her response; it should not be extended into claims about Macpherson or her care.
