Ella McCay is a family-and-work comedy-drama that has the ingredients of a warm, screwball story but struggles to make them cohere. Emma Mackey gives the film a promising center; the screenplay around her keeps scattering its attention. For viewers expecting a tightly shaped return from writer-director James L. Brooks, the result is more frustrating than funny.
What is Ella McCay about?
Brooks’s film follows Ella McCay, a 34-year-old lieutenant governor in an unnamed state, as she tries to manage political work and a difficult family life. The main action unfolds over three days in 2008. That compressed span gives the story a natural source of pressure: Ella has obligations at work while family complications demand her attention.

The setup promises a comedy-drama about the cost of being capable and idealistic when the people around you are not easy to manage. But the film’s many characters and subplots compete for space, leaving its central conflict less developed than the premise suggests.
Why does the story feel inane?
Too many threads, not enough shape
The film moves among family and workplace complications without consistently showing how one thread changes the stakes of another. Instead of building toward a clear emotional or comic payoff, episodes can feel like separate pieces gathered around Ella. The result is not simply busy; it is difficult to see what the story wants the audience to follow most closely.

- “Ella McCay” follows an idealistic young woman juggling her less-than-perfect family with her passion for her work. From writer-director James L. Brooks, this fresh and heartwarming comedy is about the people you love and how to survive them.
James L. Brooks has said that the characters came easily, while finding the story to put them in took longer. In a December 11, 2025 feature from The Walt Disney Company, he explained that he began writing because he was “going crazy not writing,” but that the story was “more of a search.” That account helps explain the film’s feel: vivid character ideas are present, but they do not settle into a consistently persuasive dramatic line.
Comedy and feeling do not reliably meet
Disney describes the film as a family story made in tribute to 1950s screwball comedies. That intention calls for brisk exchanges, escalating misunderstandings, and a strong sense of comic rhythm. The film’s tonal shifts instead make it hard to tell when a scene is meant to be funny, poignant, or both. Family drama can support comedy, but here the transitions often feel abrupt rather than cumulative.
What works, and what does not?
Emma Mackey gives Ella a focal point
Mackey is the clearest reason to stay with the film. She gives Ella a sense of purpose and helps hold the screen as the surrounding story veers between work and family. The ensemble also includes Jamie Lee Curtis, Jack Lowden, Kumail Nanjiani, Ayo Edebiri, Spike Fearn, Rebecca Hall, Julie Kavner, Becky Ann Baker, Joey Brooks, Albert Brooks, and Woody Harrelson. The cast is substantial, but a recognizable ensemble cannot by itself make scattered character material feel integrated.
Rank #2
The screenplay is the limiting factor
In her Associated Press review, Jocelyn Noveck calls the film “bafflingly disjointed, uneven, unfunny and illogical,” and describes its characters and subplots as a “tangle.” That is Noveck’s assessment, not a claim of critical consensus. Her distinction between Mackey’s performance and the script’s lack of coherence captures the film’s central imbalance: a capable lead is asked to carry writing that does not give her story enough direction.

Ella McCay may interest viewers curious about Brooks’s return to feature filmmaking or Mackey’s performance, but it is a difficult recommendation for anyone seeking a polished family comedy-drama. Its premise and cast suggest a lively portrait of a woman balancing public responsibility with private turmoil. Its uneven structure and uncertain tone keep that portrait from coming into focus.
