Elf was released on November 7, 2003. Its cast went on to a wide range of film and television work; three of its principal actors—James Caan, Ed Asner, and Bob Newhart—have since died. The career examples below come from a retrospective published in December 2024, so they are a dated snapshot, not a complete list of what every performer is doing in October 2026.
Who played the main characters in Elf?
Directed by Jon Favreau, the holiday comedy follows Buddy, a human raised by elves, as he travels to New York to find his biological father, Walter Hobbs. The central cast includes Will Ferrell as Buddy, Zooey Deschanel as Jovie, James Caan as Walter, Mary Steenburgen as Walter’s wife Emily, Bob Newhart as Papa Elf, and Ed Asner as Santa. Supporting roles include Daniel Tay as Michael Hobbs, Faizon Love as Gimbel’s manager, Peter Dinklage as Miles Finch, and Amy Sedaris as Deb. Favreau also appears as a doctor. TV Guide’s cast listing identifies the film and its performers.

What did Will Ferrell say about the film’s tone?
In the same November 2003 Blackfilm.com interview, Ferrell described the hoped-for mix of comedy and holiday feeling: “Hopefully we have made a movie that people are going to find funny and something that can be a shared experience for the entire family in a way that’s emotionally satisfying as a story but also works as a comedy and captures the spirit of the holidays all kind of rolled into one.”
