ElevenLabs’ original AI Dubbing launch offered to translate video and audio into more than 20 languages while retaining characteristics of the original speaker’s voice. That figure describes the launch-era product, not its current range: ElevenLabs’ documentation now advertises support for 90+ languages. The service has also evolved, but it still does not include built-in lip-sync or live dubbing.
What ElevenLabs’ original AI Dubbing launch did
ElevenLabs introduced AI Dubbing as a way to localize existing audio and video without recording every language from scratch. Rather than translating a script and reading it in a generic synthetic voice, the workflow was designed to recognize speech, translate it, generate speech using characteristics of the original speaker, and incorporate the result into the source media. The original announcement described support for more than 20 languages, including Hindi, Portuguese, Spanish, Japanese, Ukrainian, Polish, and Arabic. ElevenLabs’ original launch announcement is the source for that historical claim.
That combination matters for documentaries and other voice-led work: narration, interviews, and presenter-led footage can be made available to more audiences while aiming to retain the feel of the speaker. It is still automated localization, not a guarantee of a publication-ready translation or performance.
Why the “20 languages” figure is outdated
The original figure reflected the launch-era language support associated with Eleven Multilingual v2. It should not be read as a current product ceiling. As of August 16, 2026, ElevenLabs’ Dubbing documentation advertises 90+ languages, including English, Spanish, French, German, Japanese, Chinese, and Arabic. A language count does not establish equal translation or voice quality for every language pair.

What Dubbing v2 changes
ElevenLabs announced Dubbing v2 on May 28, 2026; the announcement page was updated July 28, 2026. The company says v2 conditions generated speech on the original performance rather than only on a transcript, with the aim of carrying over emotion, pacing, tone, and delivery. Those are product claims, not independent measurements of accuracy across accents, languages, or recording conditions. The announcement describes v2 as being in alpha. Read ElevenLabs’ Dubbing v2 announcement.
Readers may encounter references to Dubbing v2, older V1 behavior, and Dubbing Studio. They are not interchangeable labels for every control or billing rule: watermark options, editing features, and availability can depend on the workflow. Check the current interface and documentation for the specific path you plan to use.
How to dub a video or audio file
- Open Dubbing in ElevenLabs.
- Upload an audio or video file, or use the URL-import option where supported.
- Select one or more target languages.
- Open Advanced settings if you need to adjust speaker similarity.
- Submit the job, then review the output before downloading or publishing it.
ElevenLabs lists upload formats including AAC, AIFF, AVI, FLAC, M4A, M4V, MKV, MOV, MP3, MP4, MPEG, MPG, OGA, OGG, OPUS, WAV, WEBA, WEBM, WMV, and 3GPP. Its documented exports include MP4, AAC, AAF timeline data, SRT subtitles, and WAV files with separate speaker tracks. Automatic Dubbing has a stated upload limit of 2 GB or 180 minutes; ElevenLabs recommends no more than nine unique speakers per file for best quality. These limits and format details are in the general Dubbing documentation and the Dubbing product guide.
Dubbing Studio adds controls such as transcript editing, speaker reassignment, per-clip regeneration, and multi-language project handling. Speaker-similarity adjustment involves a trade-off: ElevenLabs warns that a higher setting can preserve identity more closely but sound less natural when the languages have very different phonetic characteristics.

What the system preserves—and what still needs review
ElevenLabs says Dubbing aims to preserve speaker identity, tone, pace, style, emotional delivery, timing, and background audio. Speaker separation is also a documented capability. These aims do not mean that every voice, emotion, soundtrack, or speaker transition will be reproduced perfectly. Voice identity here means retaining characteristics of the source voice in generated speech, not a promise of an exact or flawless copy.
Practical review is especially important for documentary material, where names, dates, technical terms, quotations, and context can affect meaning. Check translated audio against the source and have a fluent reviewer assess the target language. Pay particular attention to:
- Proper nouns, acronyms, specialist terminology, idioms, humor, and regional phrasing.
- Interruptions, code-switching, short utterances, and similar-sounding speakers.
- Crosstalk, noisy recordings, music, sound effects, and changes in recording level.
- Timing: a translated sentence may expand or contract, making delivery sound rushed or unusually slow.
- On-screen text, which is not the same thing as spoken dialogue and may need separate localization.
ElevenLabs promotes handling background audio and speaker separation, including overlapping speech, but difficult source audio remains a production risk rather than a guaranteed success case. For legal, medical, technical, culturally sensitive, or reputationally important content, use qualified human review. Automated speech generation does not supply professional casting, voice direction, cultural adaptation, or line-by-line quality assurance.
Lip-sync and live translation
ElevenLabs Dubbing does not provide built-in lip-sync, according to its product documentation. A translated soundtrack or exported video can therefore leave a visible mismatch between a speaker’s mouth and the new words. If mouth movement must match translated speech—especially for close-up interviews or presenter-led footage—you will need a separate lip-sync workflow or a video-localization service that includes it.

Pricing, credits, and free-plan watermarking
Dubbing is available on all plans, including Free, but ElevenLabs says free-plan dubs are automatically watermarked; paid subscriptions do not apply that watermark. Pricing depends on the workflow, source duration, number of target languages, and plan credits. Check the cost shown in the Dubbing interface before confirming a job; the help page says the estimate is displayed in the interface, and additional languages in Dubbing Studio can incur translation credits plus audio-generation costs. ElevenLabs’ Dubbing cost guidance explains the billing considerations.
The same help page records these rates as applying “at the time of writing” on August 19, 2024—not as guaranteed current prices:
| Workflow | Watermarked | Without watermark |
|---|---|---|
| Automatic dubbing | 2,000 credits per minute (ElevenLabs rate, August 19, 2024) | 3,000 credits per minute (ElevenLabs rate, August 19, 2024) |
| Dubbing Studio | 5,000 credits per minute (ElevenLabs rate, August 19, 2024) | 10,000 credits per minute (ElevenLabs rate, August 19, 2024) |
Those historical figures should not be used to budget a current production. The live ElevenLabs pricing page lists monthly plans, but credits and included features can change. Because cost may vary with output languages and workflow, price a representative sample in your account before estimating a full project. Dubbing v2’s current flow does not offer the older watermark-for-credit-discount toggle described for legacy V1 and Dubbing Studio.

API access and operational limits
ElevenLabs markets a Dubbing API, and its API reference documents an endpoint for dubbing an audio or video file into a selected language: Create a dubbing project. However, ElevenLabs documentation has also indicated that the Dubbing v2 API rollout was still in progress. Developers should verify account access, endpoint status, quotas, and model availability in the live documentation before designing a production integration.
For job management, ElevenLabs documents up to five concurrent dubbing jobs on self-serve plans and a default of 100 on Enterprise. Requests above the applicable limit can return a too_many_concurrent_requests error. The company says failed or canceled Dubbing Studio jobs automatically refund credits, and failed Dubbing v2 jobs are not charged. If a job remains queued or stuck loading, the documented recovery step is to cancel and resubmit it. See the Dubbing documentation for current operational details.
How it compares with video-localization alternatives
ElevenLabs is most compelling when the priority is voice-led localization and downloadable audio, subtitle, or timeline assets. If video mouth movement or a broader localization workflow matters more, compare tools on those specific requirements rather than language count alone.
| Option | Documented fit | Pricing information available |
|---|---|---|
| ElevenLabs Dubbing | Voice identity and delivery are central product aims; no built-in lip-sync or live dubbing. Language coverage is advertised as 90+. | Credit-based; current cost depends on workflow and project. Use the in-product estimate. |
| Rask AI | Its pricing page promotes multi-speaker lip-sync, making it a candidate for video-first localization where mouth movement matters. | On August 16, 2026, the page listed a three-minute free trial, Creator at $60/month for 25 minutes, Creator Pro at $150/month for 100 minutes, Business at $750/month for 500 minutes, and custom Enterprise pricing. Rask pricing. |
| HeyGen | Its creator product combines video translation options, including lip-sync, with a broader avatar and video-generation ecosystem. It may be more than needed for audio-only localization. | On August 16, 2026, its creator pricing page listed audio dubbing without lip-sync at two credits per minute and full video translation with lip-sync at five credits per minute. Its API pricing listed Speed audio-only at $0.0167/second (about $1/minute), Speed with lip-sync at $0.0333/second (about $2/minute), and Precision with lip-sync at $0.0667/second (about $4/minute). Rates are from the respective creator pricing and API pricing pages and should be checked live. |
| Human dubbing and localization | Better suited to projects requiring acting choices, script adaptation, cultural judgment, or professional review, including broadcast and high-stakes material. | Not stated in the cited sources; total cost depends on runtime, languages, talent, revisions, rights, and quality assurance. |
Do not assume AI dubbing is always cheaper than a human production: the comparison changes with language count, runtime, revisions, talent, rights, review, and lip-sync requirements.

It is a practical option for creators, educators, podcasters, course producers, and publishers who want to test multilingual distribution or produce a first dubbed version while retaining characteristics of the source speaker. It is also worth considering when you need separate audio tracks, subtitle files, or timeline assets for further editing.
It is not a complete solution on its own for live interpretation, lip-sync-critical footage, or productions where every line requires professional translation and voice direction. Documentaries with sensitive testimony or factual claims deserve particular care: check both linguistic accuracy and whether the generated performance changes the tone or apparent emphasis of the original.
