Multiply those totals by the applicable energy charge on your electricity bill. For example, at â‚ą4.50 per kWh, 72 kWh adds â‚ą324 in energy charges for a 30-day month—not necessarily â‚ą324 to the full bill.
How much electricity does a 100 W setup use?
Convert watts to kilowatts, then multiply by the hours the equipment runs:
- 100 W Ă· 1,000 = 0.1 kW.
- 0.1 kW Ă— 24 hours = 2.4 kWh per day.
- 2.4 kWh Ă— 30 days = 72 kWh per 30-day month.
- 2.4 kWh Ă— 365 days = 876 kWh per year.
These are energy-use calculations for a constant 100 W load. They are not a measurement of OBS or of a particular computer. Include the monitor, capture equipment, networking gear, or other devices only if they are included in the assumed 100 W total.
Calculate the energy-charge estimate
Use the energy rate that applies to your consumer category and consumption slab:

Here, R is your applicable energy charge in rupees per kWh. At â‚ą4.50/kWh, for example, 72 Ă— â‚ą4.50 = â‚ą324 for the 30-day month. That is an illustration using one Chhattisgarh tariff slab, not a nationwide rate.
Energy charges are not always the same as the change in your complete bill. Fixed charges, duties, adjustments, and subsidies can also affect the amount due; fixed charges may apply whether or not you consume energy.

Why there is no single India-wide rate
The Ministry of Power says electricity tariffs in India are determined by the appropriate electricity regulatory commissions, and state governments may also provide subsidies. Check your latest bill and the tariff order for your location, consumer category, and consumption slab rather than applying a single national rate. See the Ministry of Power statement via PIB.
These dated FY 2026–27 schedules illustrate how rates differ. They are examples from named jurisdictions, not interchangeable estimates for every household:

With a telescopic tariff, the next 72 units may not all be charged at the rate shown for the household’s highest slab. The marginal cost depends on how the tariff applies to added consumption and the household’s existing use. Use the method stated in the relevant tariff order or bill.
How to estimate your own OBS electricity cost
- Find the actual average load. If your complete setup averages 100 W, use that figure. If you do not know the wall draw, measure it rather than assuming OBS always uses 100 W.
- Convert watts to kilowatts. Divide average watts by 1,000.
- Multiply by operating hours. For 24/7 use, multiply kW by 24 for a daily kWh estimate, then by the days in the period.
- Apply your tariff. Multiply the added kWh by the applicable energy charge, accounting for the way your tariff handles slabs.
- Check the whole bill separately. Include applicable fixed charges and other bill components only as your tariff specifies.
Power draw can fluctuate during use. The U.S. Department of Energy recommends measuring over a period and dividing the energy used by that period to determine average power. A plug-in electricity usage meter that records watts and kWh can help establish a representative load. DOE guidance on estimating appliance and electronic energy use.

What this estimate does—and does not—include
- It estimates electricity use attributable to a constant 100 W load running 24 hours a day.
- It does not establish the actual draw of your computer, OBS settings, or other equipment.
- It does not include equipment outside the stated 100 W measurement.
- The rupee calculation estimates energy charges, not necessarily the total increase in your electricity bill.
