At Electric Island in Cottesloe on 5–6 April 2025, a video showed three people in the water beyond the event fence while the festival played nearby. One appeared to be lying on a float and two others danced. The footage prompted a “free way to enjoy the music” framing, but reporting did not establish who the people were, whether they held tickets or what they intended.
What happened at Cottesloe Beach
Electric Island ran at Cottesloe Beach over the weekend of 5–6 April 2025. PerthNow reported on 7 April that a TikTok video showed three people in the water outside the festival fence. One appeared to be lying on a float; the other two danced in the water. The festival featured Duke Dumont, Hayden James, Hot Dub Time Machine and Darude, according to PerthNow’s report.
The video was attributed to British expat Hannah, whose account was identified as @hanrobotham. Its caption read: “Why pay for a ticket for the event when you can float in the ocean for free?” That is the creator’s caption, not a verified statement from the people shown. PerthNow described the video as having more than 51,000 views when it published its report on 7 April 2025; that dated figure is not a current view count.
Was it really a ticket-free workaround?
The footage and caption support the playful “watch from the water” interpretation, but they do not prove that the people lacked tickets or deliberately bypassed event entry. Their identities, ticket status and intentions were not independently established in the report. The most precise description is that the video showed people in the water beyond the fence while the event was taking place.

What the 2025 event listing said
The Megatix listing for Electric Island Perth: Saturday gave 5 April 2025 as the event date and listed hours of 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. at Cottesloe Beach. It described the event as 18+, required valid ID, listed no re-entry and cashless bars, and offered General Admission and VIP ticket types. These are the listing’s terms for the 2025 Saturday event; they do not establish anything about the people in the video. See the 2025 Saturday listing.
What changed for the 2026 edition
The organizer’s 2026 Perth event page also names Cottesloe Beach as the venue, but its practical details apply to that edition, not retroactively to 2025. The page lists shuttle buses between Cottesloe Train Station and Marine Parade, with rideshare pickup and drop-off at Forrest Street Car Park 2. It says the 2026 event is 18+, has no pass-outs, is cashless, and allows an empty plastic water bottle and a bag no larger than 20 cm by 30 cm. Check the event page for the edition you plan to attend, since later terms may change.

The report did not provide the council decision record or the petition itself, so the approval conditions and petition details cannot be established from that account.
