Albert Einstein’s 1894 violin sold for £860,000 at the hammer on 8 October 2025. A reported 26.4% buyer’s premium pushed the buyer’s total above £1 million; the hammer price itself was not $1 million. The instrument, attributed to Munich maker Anton Zunterer, was identified through historical provenance work as having belonged to Einstein.
How much did Einstein’s violin sell for?
Dominic Winter Auctioneers sold the violin for £860,000 on 8 October 2025, according to Trinity College Cambridge. That is the hammer price: the winning bid before the buyer’s fee. BBC reporting reproduced by the auction house said the 26.4% buyer’s commission brought the total above £1 million.
| Figure | What it represents |
|---|---|
| £860,000 | Hammer price at the 8 October 2025 auction, reported by Trinity College Cambridge. |
| 26.4% | Buyer’s commission reported by BBC coverage reproduced by Dominic Winter Auctioneers. |
| Above £1 million | Reported buyer’s total after the commission; this is not the hammer price, according to BBC coverage reproduced by the auction house. |
The violin had been estimated at £200,000–£300,000 by The Strad; Trinity separately gave a £300,000 guide price. The auction result substantially exceeded those figures.
Which violin was it?
The auctioned instrument was an 1894 violin attributed to Munich maker Anton Zunterer. Trinity College Cambridge says Einstein bought it in Munich before leaving for Switzerland and believes it was the first violin he purchased himself. It bears the inscription “Lina,” a name reported for Einstein’s violins.

Trinity places the instrument in Einstein’s life during the years he developed the theory of relativity and received the Nobel Prize. It also reports that he bought another violin in Berlin in 1920. These biographical details establish context, not evidence that this particular violin influenced his scientific work.
How was Einstein’s ownership established?
Dr Paul Wingfield, Trinity College Cambridge’s Director of Studies in Music, examined the historical ownership claim. His work drew on correspondence and other documents, testimony, Einstein’s movements, and handwriting. This was a provenance investigation, not a laboratory test of the violin’s maker or age. Trinity notes that Wingfield is not an expert on nineteenth-century violins.

Wingfield described his conclusion cautiously: “I am now as sure as anyone could be that this violin was indeed once owned by Einstein,” Trinity reported. The attribution rests on his assessment of the historical evidence.
What happened to the violin after Einstein left Germany?
- 1894: Einstein bought the instrument in Munich, according to Trinity College Cambridge.
- 1932: Shortly before leaving Nazi Germany for the United States, Einstein gave the violin, a bicycle, and two books to physicist Max von Laue.
- About 1952: Trinity says von Laue passed the objects to Margarete Hommrich about twenty years later. A 2026 trade report says the objects had been in the family since 1952.
- 2025: Hommrich’s great-great-granddaughter consigned the violin, which sold at Dominic Winter Auctioneers on 8 October.
The documented chain helps explain why the violin was not with Einstein when he emigrated. It was given to a colleague and subsequently passed into the Hommrich family. Calling it “long-lost” is headline shorthand: the accounts describe a line of ownership, not a defined period when its whereabouts were unknown.

Why did Einstein value the violin?
Einstein is often associated with physics, but he also played music. Trinity College Cambridge quotes him as saying, “I know that most joy in my life has come to me from my violin,”. The college reports the quotation; it should be understood as a reported statement rather than independently verified here against an original recording or document.
