The Tomatometer summarizes critics’ reviews; the Popcornmeter reflects verified audience ratings. Rotten Tomatoes’ displayed critics consensus says the film “maintains a slick stride” but falls short of Wright’s high bar for inventive action extravaganzas. That is the site’s aggregate editorial summary, not a quote from an individual critic.
What is the film about?
In a near-future society, The Running Man is television’s top-rated game show. Contestants have to survive 30 days while professional assassins hunt them, with their movements broadcast. Ben Richards, played by Glen Powell, joins the contest to try to save his sick daughter. His resistance makes him a fan favorite—and a threat to the system. Paramount Global Content’s film listing and Rotten Tomatoes give this premise.

Is the 2025 film a remake or based on Stephen King’s book?
It is a new adaptation of Stephen King’s 1982 novel, originally published under his Richard Bachman pseudonym; it is not simply a remake of the 1987 Arnold Schwarzenegger film. That earlier movie was a relatively loose adaptation. Rotten Tomatoes’ editorial coverage says Wright’s version was intended to follow the novel more closely.
Wright described one element of the book he valued as Ben being “out in the world on his own,” making the story “like the deadliest game of hide and seek.” The remark is attributed to Wright in Rotten Tomatoes’ adaptation coverage, which reproduces his comment from an Empire interview. The distinction matters: the source material for both films is King’s novel, even though the 2025 film follows a different adaptation approach.
