The final image shows the completed Solidgoldmagikarp data center outside town. Writer-director Ari Aster calls it the film’s “unequivocal winner”: while Eddington’s people are consumed by conflict, the AI-linked project moves from promise to completion. The image is pointed, but it is not proof that the center secretly caused the town’s violence—or that it literally collected the characters’ data.
What happens in the ending?
After the violent confrontation, Joe is left brain-dead and in a wheelchair. Dawn gains influence, and the data center opens. The closing shot turns away from the characters and their immediate fates to show the completed facility—the development that framed the story from the beginning.
Aster told TIME that the film begins with the data center’s promise and ends with its realization. He calls it peripheral to the surface action but central to the film’s point. The distinction matters: the center is not established as the cause of every event. Its completion is instead set against the disorder that has occupied the town.
Why does the film end on the data center?
In the A24 production notes reproduced by the Festival de Cannes, Aster calls the facility the film’s “ambient heart.” He connects it to distraction, power, and control over information: people direct suspicion and anger toward their neighbors while power over data remains elsewhere. The last wide view makes that contrast visible. The town’s personal and political struggles fill the story, but the project keeps advancing.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Aster also describes the center as hyper-scale and linked to AI. One way he suggests reading the film is that its characters’ stories have become training data; he frames AI as a crisis developing alongside the crises they face. That is an interpretive lens, not an in-world revelation that this particular facility has captured these characters’ information. The film leaves the idea suggestive rather than literal.
Who sent the masked attackers?
The film does not identify their sender as a settled fact. Aster says there are indications that the attackers are Antifa, but he leaves open whether they might have been sent to create that impression by right-wing interests, left-wing interests, or people who benefit from the data center. Those are possibilities for viewers to weigh, not confirmed plot answers.

That uncertainty fits a story in which characters sense that something is wrong but disagree about what it is. Aster has described the film’s perspective as increasingly gripped by paranoia, a point also reflected in The Guardian’s interview with him. The ending does not resolve the town’s competing explanations with a final conspiracy reveal.
Who wins—and who loses?
Joe has attained political power in a narrow sense, but his condition leaves him without agency and dependent on others. Dawn, who has convictions and wants a platform, gains influence. Aster describes her trajectory as a success for her and Joe’s condition as carrying an element of karmic punishment. Neither personal outcome is as unambiguous as the data center’s completion, which he identifies as the film’s one unequivocal win.

Three ways to read the final image
- The project outlasts the spectacle. The town’s political crisis supplies the drama, but the film ends with the development that was present from the outset.
- Anger is redirected toward neighbors. Aster’s production notes suggest that suspicion and conflict between people can distract from who holds power over information and data.
- The conspiracy remains unresolved. The attackers’ identity and motives are left open. Any account of who hired them should be treated as an interpretation rather than a confirmed answer.
Aster summed up the premise in the production notes: “If I had to boil it down, I’d say Eddington is really just about a data center being built.” The official A24 film page identifies Eddington as a 2025 film written and directed by Aster, set in May 2020 in Eddington, New Mexico. That context anchors the story, while the ending leaves its larger political meaning open.
