What did Eddie Murphy say about playing Inspector Clouseau?
In a TODAY interview with Al Roker, Murphy said, “I’m Inspector Clouseau in the next Pink Panther.” Roker asked, “Now, are you French in this?” Murphy replied, “Maybe.” He continued: “Well, he has to be French. But he could also be Haitian.” Murphy then said, “I will tell you he’s black. He’s black. He’s black. We know he’s black. He’s black.”
The official TODAY video listing is dated July 28, 2025; the transcript page for the extended interview lists July 31, 2025 as its publication date. The interview is the source for Murphy’s on-record casting confirmation and his brief comments about the character’s identity. Watch or read the TODAY interview.
Will Murphy’s Clouseau be French?
Murphy did not give a definite answer. His “Maybe” leaves the character’s nationality open, and his follow-up mentions both French and Haitian possibilities. He did say the character would be Black. The exchange establishes Murphy’s comments, not a final character biography or plot for the film.

What is known about the Pink Panther reboot?
The latest clear statement in the cited sources is Murphy’s 2025 confirmation that he will play Clouseau. The project had appeared in earlier development reporting: on May 17, 2023, TheWrap reported that Murphy was “in talks” for the role. That article also named Jeff Fowler as director, Chris Bremner as screenwriter, and Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich as producers. Its live-action/CG hybrid description and premise were attributed to The Hollywood Reporter. These are details reported in 2023, not confirmation that those creatives remain attached or that the description reflects the finished film. Read TheWrap’s 2023 report.
The available reporting does not establish whether filming has begun, give a release date, or confirm a final plot. Murphy’s interview confirms his role; it does not settle those other production questions.

How Murphy’s casting fits the franchise
The Pink Panther was the name of a diamond in the 1963 first film. Peter Sellers became closely associated with Inspector Clouseau in the early films; the character was also played by Alan Arkin and Roger Moore. Steve Martin led the 2006 reboot, The Pink Panther, and its 2009 sequel, The Pink Panther 2. Murphy’s casting adds another actor to the role’s screen history, but it does not establish that the new movie will continue any earlier film’s plot. More on the franchise and its portrayals.
