Sheeran got the memorial tattoo with Gudinski’s son Matt at Grey Street Tattoo in Melbourne, after performing at Gudinski’s state memorial in March 2021.
What does Ed Sheeran’s Michael Gudinski tattoo look like?
The design is a silhouette of a hand with its index finger pointing upward. It represents Gudinski’s familiar “No. 1” gesture. Sheeran had the tattoo placed on his forearm, according to The Independent’s 26 March 2021 report.
Who got the tattoo, and where?
Sheeran was tattooed alongside Matt Gudinski, Michael’s son, at Grey Street Tattoo in St Kilda, Melbourne. 7NEWS reported that Andrew Gudinski also got the design. The reported placements differed:
| Person | Reported placement | Design |
|---|---|---|
| Ed Sheeran | Forearm | Upward-pointing hand silhouette |
| Matt Gudinski | Below his shoulder | Upward-pointing hand silhouette |
| Andrew Gudinski | Calf | Upward-pointing hand silhouette |
7NEWS’s report establishes the shared motif and different placements, but does not say the tattoos were identical in size or execution. It also does not establish that these were the only people who received the design. Grey Street Tattoo described the gathering in a studio post as a fitting memorial to a Melbourne icon.

Why did Sheeran get the tattoo?
The tattoo was a personal tribute to Gudinski, who had a major influence on Australian music. Sheeran spoke of their affection in a social-media tribute quoted by The Independent: “Nothing will fill the void he left in our lives, but the memories we all have of him will live on.”
Sheeran also recalled Gudinski’s response to “Castle On the Hill.” Gudinski would shout “we were younger then” when he saw Sheeran; Sheeran joked that Gudinski had misheard the lyric, which is “I was younger then.” The gesture on the tattoo offered a recognisable symbol of Gudinski rather than a written inscription.

How the tattoo followed Gudinski’s memorial
Michael Gudinski founded Mushroom Records in May 1972 and died in his sleep on 2 March 2021, aged 68. His state memorial was held at Melbourne’s Rod Laver Arena on 24 March. Sheeran performed “Castle On the Hill” and the then-new song “Visiting Hours”; coverage reported that he became emotional during the performance. ABC News’ memorial coverage documented the event and performances.
Reports published on 26 March 2021 said the tattoo session took place on the Thursday after the memorial. The sequence—memorial performance, then a shared tattoo with Gudinski’s son—makes the design’s meaning and timing clear: it commemorated a close personal and professional relationship through Gudinski’s signature No. 1 pose.
