Ed Sheeran’s “Azizam” was released on 4 April 2025—not as a new 2026 release. The pop single, made with Swedish-Iranian producer Ilya Salmanzadeh, takes its title from a Persian term of endearment and began the campaign for Sheeran’s album Play, released later that year.
When did “Azizam” come out?
Warner Music Ireland announced “Azizam” as a new single on 4 April 2025. Apple Music’s catalog lists it as a one-song pop single with a two-minute duration. The release was credited to Gingerbread Man Records and Atlantic Records UK under exclusive licence to Warner Music UK Limited. Warner Music Ireland’s announcement and the Apple Music listing document the original release.

What does “Azizam” mean, and how is it pronounced?
Warner describes azizam as a Persian term of endearment meaning “my dear” or “my beloved.” Official Charts gives the pronunciation as “ah-zee-zam” and explains that the word derives from aziz (“beloved”) with the possessive suffix -am. Official Charts’ explainer was published before the single’s release and contains an outdated note saying the release date had not been confirmed; Warner’s announcement and Apple Music’s catalog establish the date.
Who made the single, and what was its musical idea?
Sheeran worked with Swedish-Iranian producer Ilya Salmanzadeh on the track. Warner framed their sessions as bringing Persian and Irish folk influences together in a pop setting; that is the label’s description of the song’s approach, rather than a general claim about either musical tradition.
#1 Best Overall
Warner presented “Azizam” as a love song and an invitation to dance until sunrise. In the label’s 4 April 2025 announcement, Sheeran said: “Even though it’s completely different to anything that I’ve ever done before, Azizam feels familiar to me. I wanted to create a party atmosphere in a song and Ilya Salmanzadeh, who I worked with on the track, helped bring that to life. He was so inspiring to work with.”
How did “Azizam” connect to the album Play?
The single preceded Play, which Warner announced for release on 12 September 2025. The album announcement described Sheeran’s exploration of Indian and Persian musical cultures and their connections to the Irish folk tradition he grew up with. Sheeran said: “Play was an album that was made as a direct response to the darkest period of my life. Coming out of all of that I just wanted to create joy and technicolour, and explore cultures in the countries I was touring.” Warner’s album announcement places the single within that wider album campaign.

Was there another version of “Azizam”?
Yes. The Associated Press later reported that a Farsi version was released in April featuring Iranian singer Googoosh. It was written and produced with Ilya Salmanzadeh, Savan Kotecha and Johnny McDaid. This was a later version, distinct from the original single. The Associated Press report covers that release.
