Dynamic ad insertion (DAI) places selected advertisements into a live stream at designated breaks. The stream signals an ad opportunity, an ad decision system chooses creatives, and an insertion workflow joins the ad media to the program for playback. The exact division of work depends on whether a service stitches the stream, a separate component manipulates its manifest, or the player coordinates ad playback.
How a live ad becomes part of the stream
- Prepare the stream and mark breaks. The encoder or origin supplies a compatible HLS or DASH stream. Ad opportunities need signals in the stream or manifest so the insertion workflow can identify where a break starts and ends. AWS MediaTailor’s documented live HLS setup supports markers such as
#EXT-X-CUE-OUT/#EXT-X-CUE-INand#EXT-X-DATERANGE. AWS explains its HLS ad-marker options. - Register a stream session, where required. In Google’s live pod-serving workflow, the player registers the stream and receives a unique session identifier used in subsequent requests. Google documents the live pod-serving flow.
- Announce or detect the break. At the scheduled opportunity, manifest markers or another supported signal identify the avail and its duration. In Google’s server-guided ad insertion (SGAI) workflow, an optional Early Ad Break Notification (EABN) can give the system advance notice. Google recommends sending it about one minute or more before scheduled breaks; this is guidance for that Google workflow, not a universal timing standard. Google’s SGAI guide describes EABN.
- Choose advertisements. The ad decision server evaluates the ad request and available targeting information, then returns creative details. In AWS’s described workflow, MediaTailor passes viewer parameters to an ad decision server, which returns ad creative URLs in a VAST or VMAP response. AWS outlines the MediaTailor workflow.
- Assemble the ad pod and deliver it. Depending on the architecture, a hosted service or a separate manifest manipulator joins ad references or segments to the program’s delivery path. The result may be a personalized manifest or a stream served with ad breaks integrated. Google’s full-service DAI and pod-serving approaches assign this work differently. Google’s DAI documentation describes its serving options.
- Play the break and report events. The player follows the content and ad media, responds to break metadata, and sends applicable verification or tracking events. Measurement is a separate integration concern from inserting ad media.
Which insertion architecture handles what?
These are vendor-specific workflow descriptions, not interchangeable products or a guarantee that every implementation supports every feature. Confirm current vendor documentation, supported formats, and the exact player and device matrix before selecting an approach.
| Approach | Who handles insertion | What the workflow involves | Key evaluation questions |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full-service DAI / SSAI | A hosted DAI service selects and stitches the ad pod into the stream. | The service returns a stream with breaks inserted; the player integrates with the DAI SDK or supported workflow. | Service boundary, supported player and platform, stream format, configuration control, and tracking requirements. |
| Pod-serving SSAI | The ad service supplies pods; a separate manifest manipulator stitches or embeds ad references. | The publisher retains a stream-manipulation component and coordinates sessions, manifests, and verification. | Manifest control, engineering and operations ownership, HLS/DASH details, and player integration. |
| Server-guided ad insertion (SGAI) | The server supplies break and ad metadata; the client player coordinates playback. | Manifest markers can guide breaks while the player switches to ad-pod playback. Google’s EABN is an optional advance-preparation mechanism. | Player responsibilities, manifest signaling, platform support, transitions, and measurement. |
| AWS Elemental MediaTailor workflow | MediaTailor mediates among the player/CDN, content origin, and ad decision server. | The service returns a personalized HLS or DASH manifest using viewer parameters and the ad decision. | Marker compatibility, origin/CDN configuration, ad-decision integration, and tracking mode. |
Why markers, duration, and fallback matter
Ad markers tell the insertion system where an avail occurs and how long it lasts. In AWS’s documented live MediaTailor behavior, live ad replacement uses break markers and aims to preserve the total interval between them. AWS says a live CUE-OUT needs a duration or a matching CUE-IN. Exact marker syntax and behavior depend on the protocol and service. AWS describes live ad replacement behavior.
The ad pod also needs to fit the scheduled break. Google’s pod-serving documentation notes that Ad Manager may insert slate when a selected pod is shorter than the break, filling the remaining time. Plan and test break length, marker timing, ad-pod duration, and slate or other fallback behavior together. Google’s Pod Serving API guide covers pod-serving behavior.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Insertion is not proof that an ad was viewed
A manifest containing ad media does not, by itself, establish that a viewer completed playback. Google documents media verification pings in its live pod-serving workflow. AWS’s client-tracking documentation describes impression and quartile beacons: start, first quartile, midpoint, third quartile, and complete. Publishers should integrate and validate the relevant playback and measurement events rather than treating ad insertion as a verified view. AWS describes client-side tracking events.
What DAI does not guarantee
DAI explains how ads can be selected and joined to live content; the architecture alone does not establish a universal improvement in latency, buffering, revenue, fill rate, or audience scale. Those outcomes depend on the particular service, stream, player, ad demand, and implementation. Evaluate them with evidence from the target setup rather than assuming that insertion method guarantees a result.

For creators running a continuous YouTube stream
DAI is a publisher-side advertising workflow for streams with marked ad breaks, ad decisioning, and playback measurement. It is not the same as keeping a prerecorded video or playlist live on YouTube. For that separate job, StreamNeo keeps uploaded videos looping on a YouTube channel from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It does not stream to other platforms or go live from a camera.
Or let it run in the cloud
Upload your video or playlist, add the YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on; videos stream as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. UPI and cards are supported in India, and card checkout is available worldwide. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
