The tumor was determined to be cancerous after it was removed, according to reports on Wade’s January 2025 podcast disclosure. He has not publicly established in the cited coverage what type or stage it was, or his current cancer status.
What Wade said happened
Wade described seeking medical care after stomach and urinary issues. Speaking with co-host Bob Metelus on his podcast, he recalled noticing that his urine stream had slowed: “Why is my piss coming out slow, why is my stream ain’t powerful? Why is it a little weak?” Good Morning America reported his remarks on January 30, 2025.
Wade said a full-body scan then revealed a cyst or tumor on his right kidney. Reports say he underwent surgery in December 2023 and doctors removed 40% of that kidney. The tumor was found to be cancerous after removal; the available reporting does not establish that the cancer diagnosis was confirmed before surgery. ESPN summarized Wade’s account on January 30, 2025.
Why the wording about diagnosis matters
Wade’s reported account describes a scan finding first characterized as a cyst or tumor, followed by surgery and a cancerous finding after removal. Those details do not establish a specific tumor subtype, stage, size, pathology report, or prognosis. They also do not establish Wade’s current clinical status, so the disclosure should not be treated as evidence that he currently has cancer or that he has been declared cancer-free.

What is known about the operation
Removing part of a kidney is generally called a partial nephrectomy. Baptist Health South Florida’s explainer describes the procedure as removal of part of the kidney. Its article quotes Ahmed Eldefrawy, M.D., a urologic oncologist at Baptist Health Miami Cancer Institute, saying that about 80 percent of kidney tumors are cancerous. That is general context attributed to Eldefrawy and Baptist Health—not a statistic about Wade’s tumor or an individual prediction. Baptist Health South Florida published the explainer in 2025.
Wade’s reflections on the experience
Wade said he obtained multiple medical opinions before choosing surgery. He also spoke about the emotional strain of the experience, support from family and friends, and how it affected his outlook. CBS Sports covered those reflections on January 30, 2025.
