Season 1 spoilers: Dune: Prophecy ends by revealing that Desmond Hart is Tula Harkonnen’s secret son—and that Valya Harkonnen secured her rise within the Sisterhood by killing its members. Those revelations connect the Harkonnens to the Sisterhood’s hidden history, but they do not explain who else shaped Desmond or where his extraordinary powers come from.
Is Desmond Hart Tula Harkonnen’s son?
Yes. The finale’s flashbacks reveal that Tula secretly gave birth to Desmond, making the feared soldier her son. Showrunner Alison Schapker told the Los Angeles Times that this family connection was planned from the outset, rather than added as a late twist.
The revelation changes the meaning of Tula’s connection to Desmond: she is not simply a Sisterhood member confronting a dangerous adversary, but a mother facing the consequences of a secret kept for years. It also complicates Desmond’s place in the story. Knowing his mother answers one question about his origins; it does not establish who else influenced him or turned him into a weapon.
What did Valya do to gain power?
The finale’s flashbacks show that Valya’s path to leadership involved killing members of the Sisterhood. Schapker framed Valya’s decision as one she believed would protect the future. That motivation helps explain how Valya understands her actions, but it does not erase their cost or settle whether her choices were justified.
#1 Best Overall
The revelation makes Valya’s authority inseparable from violence within the institution she leads. Her position is not simply the result of political maneuvering: the flashbacks show that the Sisterhood’s own members paid a price for her ascent.
What the finale answers—and what it leaves open
The season’s revelations redraw the relationships among Tula, Desmond, and Valya, but leave key parts of Desmond’s story unresolved. Schapker said the future story would ask who else recognized his potential and how and why he was weaponized. As she put it, “That gives us more questions to guide us in the future.”
The finale’s approach was to provide answers that change how viewers understand the season without explaining every mystery. Schapker described the aim this way: “You want to feel like there were enough answers given. That you’ve been on a journey in Season 1 and you learned things. Then, by the end, everything has changed and you understand who these characters are, what’s between them, what the stakes are and what the truth is in a new way.”
In particular, the finale does not identify the force behind Desmond’s powers. His family origin and the question of who exploited his potential are related, but they are not the same mystery.

Dune: Prophecy takes place roughly 10,000 years before Paul Atreides and follows the early Sisterhood, the institution that precedes the Bene Gesserit. HBO identifies Sisterhood of Dune by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson as an inspiration for the series. TIME characterizes the relationship between that book and the show as loose, so the novel is useful background rather than a complete account of the television plot or its finale secrets.
The Harkonnen family dispute in the series draws on expanded-universe material about the family’s history and its account of an ancestor’s disgrace. That background needs a qualification: TIME notes that many Dune fans do not regard Brian Herbert’s expanded-universe explanation of the feud as canonical. It should not be presented as a conflict fully explained in Frank Herbert’s original novel.

For viewers who want to explore that connection, HBO’s named inspiration, Sisterhood of Dune, offers one route into the wider fictional background—not a scene-by-scene key to the show.
