Giedi Prime, the Harkonnen home world in Dune: Part Two, appears in stark black and white because its sunlight is imagined to strip away visible color. Director Denis Villeneuve also gave that “black sun” a political meaning: “If your own sun destroyed colors, politically it’s a very fascist world.” The look is both a fictional feature of the planet and the result of filming infrared light with specially configured cameras.
What the black-and-white image means in the story
Giedi Prime’s “black sun” is a piece of fictional world-building, not a claim about the astrophysics of a real planet. Cinematographer Greig Fraser described it as an “anti-sun” that pulls out visible light, leaving a world whose daylight contains infrared but no ordinary visible spectrum. That premise makes the Harkonnen planet feel alien and oppressive rather than simply giving it a monochrome color grade. Fraser’s explanation to ABC News
Villeneuve connected the drained palette to the Harkonnens’ politics in an interview with Variety: “If your own sun destroyed colors, politically it’s a very fascist world.” That is the director’s stated interpretation of the visual idea, not the only possible reading of the images. How the filmmakers created the look
This is not ordinary black-and-white photography. A conventional monochrome image starts with visible light and removes its color information. For Giedi Prime, Fraser and the crew instead captured infrared light after blocking visible wavelengths, then desaturated the resulting image. The production used Alexa LF and Mini LF cameras with their infrared-cut filters removed and a visible-light-cut filter placed in front of the lens. Infrared is outside ordinary human vision, and materials reflect it differently from visible light. As a result, a costume’s familiar color does not reliably predict how it will look in the scene: black objects could register as white. The production tested materials and adjusted costumes and design choices to get the intended tones. Why the image changes between locations
The infrared look belongs to Giedi Prime’s exterior daylight sequences, not to the whole film. When characters move between interiors lit with artificial light and the planet’s exterior light, the image can move from conventional visible-color photography to infrared monochrome. Black sun versus black-and-white film

Infrared does not automatically make an image black and white. The particular filter setup, the way materials reflect infrared, and the later desaturation all contribute to the finished look. Villeneuve said the result felt alien and emphasized the commitment of cutting visible light: once that light is excluded, the filmmakers cannot simply bring back a normal visible-light image from the captured footage.
