Spoilers for Dune: Part Two. Paul defeats Feyd-Rautha, forces the Emperor to surrender, and claims the throne through a marriage pact with Princess Irulan. But the victory sets a holy war in motion, and Chani leaves rather than endorse Paul’s new imperial path. The next film is officially confirmed: Dune: Part Three is billed as the conclusion of Denis Villeneuve’s trilogy, with theatrical dates announced for December 2026.
What happens at the end of Dune: Part Two?
Paul wins the immediate struggle for control. After killing Feyd-Rautha in a duel, he compels Emperor Shaddam to yield and declares that he will marry Princess Irulan, securing a political claim to the throne. Irulan’s agreement is a pact, not a sign of romantic intimacy.
The Great Houses refuse to accept Paul’s ascent. He orders the Fremen to attack them, turning his victory into the beginning of a wider conflict. Chani watches Paul choose the imperial and prophetic role she has resisted, then rides away on a sandworm. The throne is claimed; the consequences of Paul’s rule are not resolved.
Why does Chani leave Paul?
Chani’s departure is about more than a painful marriage announcement. She has opposed the idea that Fremen freedom should depend on an outsider being treated as a prophesied savior. Paul’s choice to use that belief to gain power—and then command the Fremen toward war—puts him on a course she cannot publicly support.

The film leaves their relationship unresolved. Chani’s exit also makes the political rupture visible: she separates herself from Paul’s new imperial project instead of standing beside him as he claims authority.
Why is Paul’s victory a warning?
The ending makes a chosen-one triumph feel dangerous rather than final. Paul’s stated aims include helping the Fremen and avenging House Atreides, but he embraces the messianic identity and political leverage that let him command them. His ascent does not simply deliver justice; it gives force to a movement that is already headed toward religious war.

The prophecy has a political history. Netflix Tudum’s ending explainer notes that the Bene Gesserit planted the Lisan al Gaib prophecy among the Fremen and that Jessica works to strengthen belief in Paul. In its March 1, 2024 explanation of the ending, TIME describes the closing holy-war trajectory and reports director Denis Villeneuve’s account of Herbert’s cautionary intent. The film’s cliffhanger is therefore about what Paul’s victory unleashes, not whether he won the duel or claimed the throne.
How does the film ending differ from the novel?
Dune: Part Two adapts the second half of Frank Herbert’s 1965 novel Dune, while changing some details. Netflix’s explainer describes the broad adaptation; the differences below are specific to the book and film, not predictions about the next movie.

TIME discusses these adaptation differences in its ending analysis. They help explain why the film closes on a sharper break between Chani and Paul; they do not establish how every plot point will be handled in the sequel.

The official site gives a synopsis set nearly two decades after Paul takes control. It names Villeneuve as director and says the screenplay is by Villeneuve and Brian K. Vaughan, based on novels by Frank Herbert. The film is linked to Herbert’s Dune Messiah, which continues Paul’s story as emperor; Penguin Random House describes that novel in its Dune Messiah (Movie Tie-In) listing. The adaptation’s exact choices should be distinguished from the novel rather than assumed from it.
Villeneuve previously told TIME, “Dune Messiah should be the last Dune movie for me,” in remarks reported on March 1, 2024. That was his earlier stated intention; the official film site is the current confirmation that a third movie is planned as the trilogy’s conclusion.
