Hugh Grosvenor, 7th Duke of Westminster, and Olivia Henson married at Chester Cathedral on June 7, 2024, in a high-society wedding with unmistakable royal connections. Prince William served as an usher, Princess Eugenie attended, and thousands of people gathered outside the cathedral to watch the arrivals and departure. The ceremony was not an official royal wedding, but its setting, guests, historic jewelry and public spectacle made it one of the most visually notable non-royal weddings of the year.

This photo chronology follows the day from the crowds and ceremonial arrivals to the cathedral exit and the couple’s private celebrations at Eaton Hall.

The newlyweds leave Chester Cathedral

The defining image of the day is the couple leaving Chester Cathedral together after the ceremony. Hugh Grosvenor and Olivia Henson appeared outside to cheers, confetti and a large crowd gathered behind the barriers. Photographs from the departure show the newly married couple in their formal attire and capture the moment when the private ceremony became a public celebration.

The couple were also photographed kissing outside the cathedral. For a gallery about the wedding, this is the natural hero image: it identifies both newlyweds, establishes the Chester setting and conveys the atmosphere more clearly than a formal portrait alone.

In captions for images taken after the ceremony, Henson can accurately be identified as Olivia Henson, now Duchess of Westminster. Before the ceremony, she was Olivia Henson.

Olivia Henson arrives in a 1930 Bentley

One of the most memorable arrivals came before the ceremony, when Olivia Henson traveled to Chester Cathedral with her father, Rupert Henson, in a vintage Bentley. Coverage identifies the car as a 1930 Bentley 8-Litre; it was originally made for W.O. Bentley.

The arrival photographs bring together several of the wedding’s visual themes: the bride and her father, an important historic vehicle, the cathedral architecture and the local crowd watching from outside. They also provide a more intimate counterpoint to the later photographs of the newlyweds. Henson is seen arriving at the church rather than leaving it, still a bride-to-be and accompanied by her father.

The Emma Victoria Payne gown and Fabergé tiara

Henson wore a white wedding gown by London-based designer Emma Victoria Payne. Reports noted design elements inspired by a veil associated with Henson’s family, giving the outfit a personal connection beyond its formal appearance.

The most historically distinctive accessory was the Fabergé Myrtle Leaf Tiara. According to Fabergé’s account of the jewel, it was commissioned in 1906 for the wedding of Lord Hugh Grosvenor and Lady Mabel Crichton. The tiara is made from diamond-set sprays of myrtle leaves and berries, with engraved red-gold stalks.

The tiara should be treated as a historic family jewel, not as a standard bridal accessory or a product available for ordinary wedding shopping. Close-up photographs are particularly valuable here because they reveal the myrtle-leaf and berry design that can be difficult to see in wider arrival images.

Prince William serves as an usher

Prince William’s role was more significant than that of a conventional celebrity guest. The Prince of Wales served as an usher for his friend Hugh Grosvenor. He arrived with the ushers and used a side entrance before the ceremony, then appeared in photographs outside the cathedral after the service.

For accurate captions, identify him as Prince William, Prince of Wales, who served as an usher. Calling him simply a guest understates his role, while describing the occasion as a royal wedding overstates its constitutional status.

William’s presence also explains much of the event’s wider royal interest. The Duke of Westminster is a longstanding friend of the Prince, and coverage has identified Grosvenor as a godfather to Prince George. Some reports have also described him as a godfather to Prince Harry’s son Archie; because that point has not been stated consistently across coverage, it is better described as a reported relationship rather than an unqualified fact.

Princess Eugenie attends the cathedral

Princess Eugenie was the other clearly identified senior royal attendee in the available coverage. Photographs show her at Chester Cathedral, including images of her smiling after the ceremony.

Her appearance is an important supporting image in the gallery, but it should not be used to suggest that the entire immediate royal family attended. King Charles III, Queen Camilla, Catherine, Princess of Wales, and Prince Harry were not present, according to contemporaneous reporting. The reasons for individual absences should not be inferred from the photographs or presented as established explanations.

The Duke arrives in a green Land Rover

Before the ceremony, Hugh Grosvenor arrived at Chester Cathedral in a green Land Rover. Spectators applauded as he reached the venue, creating a distinctly local and informal moment before the aristocratic ceremony began.

This image works well after the bride’s Bentley arrival in a visual sequence: the bride arrives in a historically significant vintage car, while the groom’s arrival has a more understated country-estate character. Together, the photographs show that the day’s style was not limited to formal royal pageantry.

Thousands watch outside Chester Cathedral

The wedding attracted approximately 400 guests inside the cathedral, while thousands of members of the public gathered in Chester to watch the arrivals and departures. The crowd photographs are essential context for understanding why the wedding generated such broad visual interest.

They show the event as both a private aristocratic ceremony and a public occasion in the city. Spectators stood behind barriers, followed the arrivals and reacted as the couple emerged. Wide images of the cathedral and the crowd can therefore be placed between the arrival photographs and the ceremony departure to give the gallery a sense of scale.

Official photographs from Eaton Hall

After the cathedral ceremony, the celebrations continued at Eaton Hall, the Grosvenor family estate in Cheshire. British Vogue reported that the couple released four official photographs from the celebrations on the estate.

These images should be separated editorially from agency photographs of the cathedral. The Eaton Hall pictures represent the couple’s own official record of the reception, while the public images document the arrivals, departure and crowd outside the church. They are especially useful for readers who want to see the setting after the public ceremony, but they should not be used to imply that every detail of the private reception is known.

Optional news-context image: the orange-powder protest

News photography from June 7 also showed protesters associated with Just Stop Oil spraying orange powder paint near the crowd as the newlyweds left the cathedral. This is not one of the wedding’s principal celebratory photographs, and it should be included only in a clearly labeled news-context section.

If used, the image should not be presented as part of the couple’s official wedding album. Its purpose is to document an incident that occurred around the public departure, not to define the ceremony or reception.

Why this was not an official royal wedding

The wedding had a strong royal-news connection, but it was not a constitutional or official royal wedding. The groom is an aristocrat and close friend of Prince William; he is not a member of the reigning royal family. A precise description is “a royal-attended high-society wedding” or “a royal-adjacent wedding.”

The phrase “the most royal non-royal nuptials” describes the atmosphere and guest list, not an official classification. That distinction matters when writing headlines, captions and image metadata.

Image licensing and publication notes

Photographs of the wedding were distributed or published through outlets and agencies including PA/AP, Getty Images, WireImage, British Vogue, Tatler and Fabergé. Visibility in search results does not grant permission to reproduce any of them. A publisher should obtain the appropriate license for agency and magazine images before publication.

The four Eaton Hall photographs should also be checked for the couple’s stated usage terms. The availability of an image online does not by itself establish commercial reuse rights, syndication permission or editorial clearance.

The Bottom Line

The best photographs of the Duke of Westminster’s wedding show more than a fashionable ceremony: they document a public Chester spectacle shaped by aristocratic tradition and close royal connections. The central images are the couple’s cathedral departure, Olivia Henson’s Bentley arrival and historic tiara, Prince William serving as usher, Princess Eugenie at the ceremony, and the official reception portraits from Eaton Hall. The event was royal-attended—but not an official royal wedding.
