The truck driver in Duel is never identified, and the film never shows his face. Steven Spielberg said that was deliberate: Richard Matheson’s teleplay called for the driver to remain unseen, because, as Spielberg put it, “The unseen is more frightening than what you throw in the audience’s face.” Carey Loftin was the stunt driver behind the wheel during filming, but that production credit does not give the fictional character a name.
Who is the truck driver in Duel?
The film does not reveal the character’s name or face. Duel, a 1971 television movie based on Richard Matheson’s story and teleplay, follows David Mann as he is randomly targeted by a driver in an 18-wheel tanker truck. Amblin describes the conflict as “man vs. beast,” a framing that helps explain why the truck, rather than the person inside it, becomes the antagonist viewers can see and fear. Amblin’s film page

Why is the driver’s face never shown?
Spielberg said Matheson’s teleplay specified that viewers should not see the driver, apart from partial glimpses such as a hand or boots. Recalling the choice in an interview transcript, Spielberg said: “That was Richard Matheson. That attracted me more than anything else.” He also explained the suspense principle behind it: “The unseen is more frightening than what you throw in the audience’s face.” Spielberg interview transcript
The concealment keeps viewers from turning the threat into a fully known person. The truck’s size, movement, and pursuit remain visible, while the human intention behind them stays uncertain. That reading follows the film’s framing and Spielberg’s explanation; it is an interpretation, not a separately stated production fact.

Was the driver Carey Loftin?
Carey Loftin is credited as “The Truck Driver” in Turner Classic Movies’ cast listing. TCM’s Duel credits Spielberg’s interview clarifies the distinction: Loftin drove the truck during production and was a stunt driver. Spielberg praised him as “a very safe driver.” That identifies the person performing the driving on set, not a name or backstory for the character in the film.

Duel does not explain who the trucker is, why he targets Mann, or what his life is beyond the pursuit. The point is not a hidden identity that the film expects viewers to solve; the character is kept anonymous as part of the suspense. The audience sees the danger and its effects without receiving the driver’s face or a conventional character introduction.
TCM lists the 1971 film’s runtime as 88 minutes. TCM’s film overview
