Ahead of releasing Radical Optimism in 2024, Dua Lipa said she felt more confident not only as a performer, but also as a songwriter and decision-maker shaping how her music would sound and look. She tied that change to a clearer sense of her creative identity and to what she learned while touring Future Nostalgia.
What Dua Lipa said about her confidence
In a Yahoo Entertainment article indexed under the headline “Dua Lipa Says She’s ‘More Confident’ As a Performer Ahead of New Album,” Lipa described a broader change than stage confidence: “now this time around I’m much more confident in myself as a songwriter and as a performer and how I want things to be and sound and look.” The wording appears in the article’s search excerpt.
In an April 11, 2024, TIME interview, she also said, “I feel the most confident at this point in my life.” TIME placed the remark in the period before Radical Optimism and described her reflecting on personal change and new perspectives.
Why the album-era timing matters
The remarks were made in the run-up to Radical Optimism, Lipa’s third studio album, released May 3, 2024. A Music Week interview published later that year revisited a conversation conducted ahead of the release. It identifies the album as recorded in London and Malibu with collaborators including Kevin Parker, Danny L Harle, Caroline Ailin, and Tobias Jesso Jr.

This is a before-and-during account of her own development, not a current statement or an objective measure of her singing or live performance. Her emphasis was on feeling more assured about her craft, artistic identity, and the choices shaping the work.
How touring Future Nostalgia informed her outlook
In the Music Week interview, Lipa connected her growing confidence to the year she spent touring Future Nostalgia. She said the experience changed things and helped her understand what it takes for her to be the best version of herself. Her comments frame confidence as something developed through experience and self-knowledge, rather than as a claim that she had reached a particular performance standard.

How a collaborator described the change
Joe Kentish, Warner Records president, offered a separate perspective on Lipa’s development in Music Week: “Dua had confidence at the start, she had chutzpah, moxie, but it’s less bravado now and more steely confidence,”. His assessment distinguishes the confidence he saw earlier from the steadier assurance he associated with the Radical Optimism period; it is his characterization, not a measurement of her ability.
