Its central pleasure is watching Vijay shape an account of events to protect his family; its main weakness, in Nandini Ramnath’s view, is that the remake gives that family less room to come alive than the Malayalam original.
What is the Hindi Drishyam about?
Directed by Nishikant Kamat and starring Ajay Devgn as Vijay, the film follows a family under scrutiny after a crime involving one of the daughters. Vijay attempts to protect them by shaping their account and alibi. The premise depends on suspense and the gap between what investigators can establish and what the family says happened, so the details are best left unspoiled.

The Hindi film was listed for release on 31 July 2015 and runs 163 minutes, according to Time Out. That length matters: the film spends considerable time setting up its characters and investigation before its twists pay off.
How does the remake compare with the Malayalam original?
Jeethu Joseph’s 2013 Malayalam film is the original; the Hindi Drishyam is a remake, not a separate story. Ramnath’s Scroll review argues that the Hindi version retains the twist-driven premise but removes or compresses domestic scenes that had made the family feel more fully established. She also objects to casting and script changes she considers consequential.

Suhani Singh’s India Today review likewise finds the family bond and setting less effectively developed than in the original, while saying the suspense-focused second half improves. Mike McCahill’s Guardian review calls it overlong but twisty and satisfying, and sees the darker, more compromised Vijay as changing the story’s moral texture. Anil Sinanan’s Time Out review gives it 3/5 and describes a sober family drama shaped by police interrogation.
The useful comparison is not simply which version has the better twist. It is how each handles the family’s everyday life, its setting, the investigation, the moral compromises of its lead, and the pace at which suspense builds. Viewers who know the Malayalam film may find the Hindi remake’s changed emphasis more interesting than its plot revelations.

Tabu’s investigator
Ramnath singles out Tabu as Inspector General Meera Deshmukh, whose presence gives the investigation a strong counterweight to Vijay’s attempt to control the story. The contest between the two is central to the film’s tension.
The interrogation and final turn
Ramnath also praises the interrogation sequence, Kamlesh Sawant’s supporting performance, and the final twist. Her assessment is that the premise carries the remake even when its character-building is thinner: as she put it in Scroll, “The layers that made the original Malayalam movie so enjoyable are absent, but the Hindi remake coasts along on its winning premise.”

It can be, if you are interested in how a remake changes the balance between family drama, police procedure, and moral ambiguity. Familiarity with the original reduces the force of surprise, but the Hindi film still offers distinct performances and a different presentation of Vijay. If you mainly want a tightly paced thriller, the 163-minute runtime and the critics’ mixed views on pacing are worth weighing before you choose it.
For viewers deciding which version to see first, the Malayalam original is the place to start if they want the story in its original language and the fuller family groundwork Ramnath values. The Hindi version is a reasonable alternative for viewers drawn to its cast or who prefer Hindi, but it is best approached as its own interpretation rather than a replacement that settles the comparison.
Where does the story’s premise come from?
Ramnath notes that the Malayalam original borrows its central idea from Keigo Higashino’s Japanese thriller The Devotion of Suspect X. That connection should not be mistaken for saying the film is a direct adaptation of the novel.
