Drew Barrymore’s reunion with the Ward family happened years after she stayed with them as a child while working on Firestarter and Cat’s Eye. The later reunion took place on her talk show. In AOL’s account, Barrymore recalled how Gayle Ward and her children, Jennifer and John, made her feel at home—and how that experience shaped the kind of family life she wanted for her own daughters.
Who did Drew Barrymore live with while making Firestarter?
They were the Ward family: Gayle Ward and her children, Jennifer and John. Barrymore stayed with them while working as a child actor on the 1984 film Firestarter and on Cat’s Eye, according to AOL’s reunion coverage. The filming connection describes when she lived with the family; it was not when the reunion itself took place.
Jennifer was Barrymore’s childhood friend and, AOL reported, served as her stand-in on Firestarter. That role should not be confused with being a cast member or a credited performer.
What did Barrymore say when she reunited with them?
On a later birthday episode of her talk show, Barrymore reflected on her bond with the family. AOL reported her saying that she and Jennifer liked looking alike, worked together as doubles, and that Jennifer and John felt like the sister and brother she had wanted. She also called the Wards the first traditional family she had lived with.

Gayle Ward answered, “You are our daughter!” These remarks are presented as AOL reported them; a primary episode transcript was not established, and the exact episode date is not confirmed here.
Why the reunion mattered to Barrymore
The story is about a childhood connection that endured, not simply a visit with former acquaintances. In Barrymore’s account, the Wards offered a close family environment at a formative time, and she carried that example into her own parenting. The significance is personal: it is how she described the family’s lasting influence, rather than an independently verified psychological claim.

How Firestarter fits the story
Firestarter is the 1984 adaptation of Stephen King’s novel, starring Barrymore as a child. The film provides the context for her stay with the Wards; the reunion coverage also connects that stay to her work on Cat’s Eye. For background on the adaptation, see Vanity Fair’s 2022 interview with Stephen King or IMDb’s reference page for the 1984 film.
