Spoilers for the Dragon Ball Z manga’s Android and Cell story. The Perfect Cell Saga’s biggest twists are that Trunks’s warning comes from a future that has already diverged, Cell is a second time traveler, Vegeta knowingly lets Cell reach his perfect form, and Goku’s sudden surrender is a plan to put Gohan in the fight. Gohan’s awakening reverses the battle—only for Cell to survive his apparent self-destruction and force one last confrontation.

The official Dragon Ball recap covers this story across manga volumes 29–35, as part of the larger Android and Cell sequence. The ranking below is an editorial judgment: these turns stand out because they change what the audience knows about the threat, expose decisive character choices, or overturn an apparent outcome. Anime adaptations may differ in details.

What are the biggest plot twists in the Perfect Cell Saga?

1. Trunks’s future is not the future the heroes are living

Trunks arrives with a warning about the androids, but the androids he encounters in the present are not the ones he remembers from his future. The difference reveals that his intervention has changed history. As the official Trunks character profile explains, even small changes in the past can create a different future. His warning is therefore not a fixed script: events in the present can diverge from the world he came to prevent.

2. Cell is another traveler from the future

Bulma’s investigation of an abandoned time machine uncovers a second visitor from another future. It belongs to Cell, who killed the Trunks from his own timeline, took that Trunks’s machine, and traveled back to the past. Dr. Gero’s supercomputer created Cell using cells from Goku, Piccolo, Frieza, and others, according to the official Dragon Ball story recap.

#1 Best Overall

This reveal changes the scale of the time-travel problem: Trunks is not the only person carrying the consequences of a different future into the present. Cell’s arrival also explains why the heroes face a threat neither Trunks’s warning nor their earlier encounters with the androids had fully prepared them for.

3. Cell’s perfect form depends on absorbing Androids 17 and 18

Cell’s evolution has a specific requirement. He absorbs Android 17 to reach his Second Form, then needs Android 18 to attain his Perfect Form. He also drains humans for energy, but that is distinct from the two absorptions that drive these transformations. The official Second Form Cell profile describes the stages and their consequences.

4. Vegeta lets Cell complete the transformation

Vegeta overwhelms Second Form Cell, but Cell tempts him with the chance to fight a stronger opponent. Vegeta gives in and prevents Trunks from stopping the absorption of Android 18. Cell’s transformation is not simply an escalation the heroes fail to anticipate: it happens because Vegeta chooses the prospect of a greater challenge over the immediate chance to end the danger. The official recap and Cell profile describe Vegeta’s role in allowing Cell to reach his Perfect Form.

5. Goku gives up against Cell on purpose

At the Cell Games, Goku abruptly forfeits and sends Gohan into the fight. The official recap says Goku believes Gohan can defeat Cell if pressure unlocks his hidden power. The choice is a gamble on Gohan’s potential rather than a sign that Goku has already won or that he has stopped caring about the outcome.

6. Android 16’s death triggers Gohan’s Super Saiyan 2 awakening

Gohan does not want to fight Cell, and his reluctance holds back the power Goku expects him to use. The turning point comes when Android 16 is destroyed and Gohan sees his friends injured. In his fury, Gohan awakens Super Saiyan 2, defeats the Cell Juniors, and turns the balance of the battle. The official recap captures Cell’s reaction: “He’s…changed…”

7. Cell survives the self-destruction that appears to end the battle

Gohan’s attack makes Cell regurgitate Android 18, leaving him back in his Second Form. Cell then tries to self-destruct and take the planet with him. Goku teleports Cell away at the cost of his own life, but Cell survives the explosion and returns to Earth with greater power. The apparent sacrifice does not end the threat; it creates another crisis after Goku is gone.

8. Gohan defeats Cell while injured, with Goku’s help

On his return, Cell kills Trunks. Gohan is already injured from shielding Vegeta, but fights back with a father-son Kamehameha. Goku, thought to be gone, helps him through the attack, and Gohan destroys Cell. The victory comes only after Cell’s return reverses the apparent ending once again.

9. Future Trunks must defeat the threat in his own timeline

The present timeline’s victory does not automatically resolve Trunks’s future. After being revived, he returns home. The official recap and Trunks profile say that his training in the past enables him to defeat Androids 17 and 18 and the Cell in his own timeline. His story closes through a separate confrontation, not as an automatic consequence of Gohan’s victory.

Why these twists matter

The saga’s turns work on three levels. The two timelines and Cell’s origin repeatedly revise what the heroes—and the audience—know about the danger. Vegeta’s decision and Goku’s forfeit make pivotal events consequences of character choices, not just increases in an enemy’s strength. Finally, Gohan’s awakening appears to settle the contest, while Cell’s survival makes that resolution provisional. The result is a chain of reversals in which every apparent solution has to be tested against the story’s other timeline or Cell’s next transformation.
