Goku lets Frieza live after defeating him on Namek because he chooses not to execute his beaten enemy. The scene can be read as Goku leaving Frieza to face the reality of his defeat—but the official summaries of the fight do not confirm his private motive. Frieza survives this encounter, returns to Earth for revenge, and is killed there by Trunks.
What happens when Goku defeats Frieza on Namek?
Frieza’s campaign on Namek is driven by his pursuit of the Dragon Balls and eternal life. After Krillin’s death, Goku transforms into a Super Saiyan and gains the upper hand. Frieza then tries to destroy the planet. With the others transported away, Goku and Frieza are left to finish their fight. The official retrospective describes Goku as delivering a finishing blow while Namek’s destruction is still unfolding. Why does Goku spare Frieza?
The clearest reading of the moment is that Goku considers the fight won and elects not to kill Frieza outright. Instead, he leaves him defeated. That makes the choice an act of mercy—or, at least, a refusal to finish off an opponent who can no longer match him—rather than a plan to preserve Frieza as a future rival.
That explanation is an interpretation of the scene, not a confirmed statement of Goku’s inner reasoning. The official plot summaries establish the outcome of the battle but do not explain why Goku makes that choice. They also do not provide the full exchange at the moment Frieza is spared. What happens because Frieza survives?
Goku’s decision does not permanently remove the threat. Frieza’s battered body is repaired and he is powered up. He later travels to Earth with his father, King Cold, intent on revenge. Trunks intervenes and kills Frieza and King Cold shortly after they arrive, according to the official retrospective.
