Charles Sophy, a therapist who worked with Andre Young—known as Dr. Dre—during Young’s divorce, sued him seeking $10 million and alleging harassment and intentional infliction of emotional distress. A judge denied Sophy’s request for a permanent restraining order in November 2024. In March 2025, a judge also rejected Young’s effort to strike texts from the complaint. Neither ruling decided whether Young was liable or whether Sophy was entitled to damages. The lawsuit’s later status is not established by the available reporting as of October 8, 2026.
Why did Charles Sophy sue Dr. Dre?
Sophy sued Andre Young in Los Angeles County Superior Court, seeking $10 million in actual and compensatory damages, along with exemplary and punitive damages for a jury to determine at trial, according to the Los Angeles Times. The $10 million is the amount Sophy sought, not a reported award or settlement.

The complaint reportedly alleged that Young sent Sophy late-night messages, made threats and used homophobic slurs. It also described an incident in which people allegedly impersonated FBI agents. These are claims attributed to Sophy’s complaint; the cited reports do not establish them as findings of fact.
Who is Charles Sophy?
Sophy is an osteopathic physician and therapist who reportedly began counseling Andre and Nicole Young in 2018. The couple later agreed to have him mediate divorce terms. Their divorce was finalized in December 2021, and Sophy reportedly stopped contact with them around that time. The complaint included nearly a dozen messages from February through August 2023 that Sophy characterized as threatening and abusive.

What does Dr. Dre’s side say?
Young’s lawyer, Howard King, disputed Sophy’s account and said the lawsuit was a response to Young’s complaint to the Osteopathic Medical Board of California about Sophy’s conduct during counseling, according to the Los Angeles Times. That explanation is Young’s side’s position; it is not, by itself, a court finding about either party’s conduct or motive.
What did the judges decide?
The restraining-order request was denied
On November 5, 2024, Judge Melanie Ochoa denied Sophy’s request for a permanent order of protection, finding that he had not met the applicable burden of proof for that order. The Los Angeles Times quoted the judge’s minute order: “The Court finds the party requesting the order of protection did not sustain the applicable burden of proof and accordingly the request is denied.”

That decision concerned the request for protection. It did not, on its own, resolve the separate lawsuit seeking damages.
The anti-SLAPP motion was also denied
In March 2025, Rolling Stone reported that Judge Mark H. Epstein rejected Young’s anti-SLAPP effort to strike 11 texts from the complaint. That was a procedural ruling about the texts’ place in the lawsuit, not a verdict on liability or damages.

What is the lawsuit’s current status?
The sources available for this article do not establish whether the suit was later dismissed, settled, tried or otherwise resolved. They also do not verify that it remains pending as of October 8, 2026. The Los Angeles Superior Court offers public case-access services; its official case access page explains how to search for cases and access documents. A case-specific docket would be needed to confirm any later development.
