Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero is a 2022 animated feature that puts Piccolo, Gohan, and Pan at the center of the action. Instead of treating Goku and Vegeta as the only heroes who can save Earth, the film builds its conflict around family, mentorship, neglected responsibilities, and the return of the Red Ribbon Army. A spoiler-light story overview
The revived Red Ribbon Army presents itself as a force for justice. Gamma 1 and Gamma 2 are theatrical, confident, and convinced that they are defending the world from villains. Their superhero identities make the early conflict more complicated than a simple battle between obviously good and evil characters.
Piccolo approaches the Red Ribbon Army’s operations as an investigator rather than waiting for Goku or Vegeta to solve the problem. He studies the organization, assesses the androids, and works out how to make Gohan understand the seriousness of the danger. His most controversial tactic involves Pan, whose situation is used to create the urgency Gohan has been lacking.
The story then escalates from an android conspiracy to a battle involving Cell Max, a massive weapon developed by the New Red Ribbon Army. Why Piccolo and Gohan are the real center of the film
Piccolo becomes the investigator and mentor
Piccolo has always been one of Gohan’s most important teachers, but Super Hero makes that relationship the foundation of the plot. He notices that Gohan is spending less time training and more time on his academic work. Rather than simply criticizing him, Piccolo takes responsibility for reconnecting Gohan with the part of himself that can respond to danger.
Piccolo’s relationship with Pan is equally important. He trains her in martial arts and acts as a trusted presence in her life. That makes Pan’s kidnapping more than a mechanical plot device: it threatens a child Piccolo cares about and tests the limits of how far he will go to protect his extended family.
Gohan’s conflict is about priorities, not cowardice
Gohan’s absence from regular combat is treated as a family and life-choice issue. He is a scholar and a parent, not someone who has simply forgotten how to fight. The film asks whether his academic priorities and his responsibilities to his family can coexist with his ability to defend Earth.

That framing allows Gohan to return to the story without erasing the character development that separated him from the battlefield. His comeback is not merely another transformation reveal; it is the result of Piccolo forcing him to recognize what is at stake.
Pan is a catalyst, not just a hostage
Pan’s training and her bond with Piccolo help connect the domestic and action sides of the movie. She is young, but she is not disconnected from the martial-arts world that shaped Gohan and Piccolo. Her role gives the film a generational perspective: Piccolo is now helping train Gohan’s daughter while trying to restore Gohan’s own confidence as a fighter.
