The Tournament of Power is where he first awakens it against Jiren; later, in the Dragon Ball Super manga, Goku harnesses “perfected” Ultra Instinct against Moro and uses a “newly refined” version against Granolah. These are separate developments, not one unchanged form that guarantees victory.
What does Ultra Instinct do?
The official Dragon Ball Super manga recap describes Ultra Instinct as a state in which Goku’s body reacts automatically to dodge attacks. In plain terms, the emphasis is on instinctive reaction rather than consciously deciding how to evade each blow. The recap does not provide a technical breakdown of every mechanic, nor does it establish a numerical power multiplier or speed ranking. The official story recap is the basis for this description.
That makes Ultra Instinct more than a change in Goku’s appearance: its defining point in the cited account is how he responds in combat. But automatic dodging is an advantage, not invulnerability. The same recap shows that an opponent can overcome it.
How Goku awakens it in the Tournament of Power
During the Tournament of Power, Goku unlocks Ultra Instinct before rematching Jiren. Jiren later transforms at full power, nullifying Ultra Instinct’s advantage. The sequence establishes both the state’s combat benefit and its limit: it changes the fight, but it does not guarantee that Goku will win. The official recap summarizes these story beats without serving as an episode-by-episode anime guide.

How the later manga versions differ
The familiar Tournament of Power awakening is only the beginning of Ultra Instinct’s story. The official recap describes later developments in the manga’s Moro and Granolah arcs, using different labels at each point.
| Story context | Label used by the source | What the source establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Tournament of Power, before Goku’s rematch with Jiren | Ultra Instinct | Goku’s body reacts automatically to dodge attacks; Jiren’s later full-power transformation nullifies its advantage. Official manga recap |
| Moro arc, after Merus intervenes and is erased | Perfected Ultra Instinct | Goku harnesses it before fighting Moro, who attempts to fuse with the planet. Official manga recap |
| Granolah the Survivor arc | Newly refined Ultra Instinct | Goku activates it, but Granolah eventually defeats both Goku and Vegeta. Official manga recap |
These labels belong to their specific story contexts. They show a progression in Goku’s use of Ultra Instinct, but the cited official material does not set out a complete form-by-form technical taxonomy. In particular, it does not support treating “perfected” and “refined” as interchangeable terms or assigning either a precise multiplier.

What does “Mastered Ultra Instinct” mean?
“Mastered Ultra Instinct” is a common reader-facing shorthand for Goku’s developed use of the state, especially when people are discussing the Tournament of Power. The official sources cited here use more than one label as the story progresses: “Ultra Instinct,” “perfected Ultra Instinct,” and “newly refined Ultra Instinct.” Toyotarou’s 2024 illustration interview also uses “Ultra Instinct -Sign-” for the artwork it discusses. Keep the labels tied to those contexts rather than assuming they form a complete, official naming chart.
The anime and manga are not interchangeable reference points for every detail. The Tournament of Power is the entry point for the familiar awakening against Jiren, while the cited Moro and Granolah developments come from the official site’s manga recap. That recap covers broad story events, not a complete comparison of anime and manga terminology.

What “Ultra Instinct -Sign-” says about the artwork
In a 2024 interview about his collaboration illustration, manga artist Toyotarou described the visual direction for Ultra Instinct -Sign- Goku: “I wanted to give off a more serious feeling than anime-style coloring, so I chose to use a brush-style.” He also characterized the finished pose as mysterious and divinely calm. Those remarks explain his choices for the illustration; they are not an in-story explanation of Ultra Instinct’s mechanics. Read Toyotarou’s interview on the official site.

A 2018 ComicBook.com report on an interview with series director Ryota Nakamura and producer Satoru Takami says Akira Toriyama developed Ultra Instinct as a concept distinct from Super Saiyan while planning the Tournament of Power. That is reported production history, rather than a direct quotation from Toriyama or a detailed account of the form’s story mechanics. Read the production-history report.

What the available sources do—and do not—establish
- Established: Ultra Instinct’s automatic-dodging function in the official recap, its Tournament of Power clash with Jiren, and later manga developments against Moro and Granolah.
- Not established: a precise power multiplier, numerical speed value, definitive ranking against every other form, or a complete technical taxonomy of all Ultra Instinct labels.
- Source scope: the official recap is a manga story summary; Toyotarou’s interview concerns illustration choices; the creation-history detail comes from a secondary report of an interview.
