Gohan Beast is a distinct transformation awakened during the Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero story, after Cell Max badly injures Piccolo. It is not simply another name for Gohan’s earlier Ultimate form: the official manga recap describes him returning to Ultimate first, then awakening Beast when he sees Piccolo in danger. The story establishes Beast as a major power-up, but gives no numeric power level or settled ranking against Goku, Vegeta, Piccolo, or Broly.
What is Gohan Beast?
Beast is a new state Gohan reaches in the climax of the Super Hero arc. The official account describes a tremendous surge of power and shows Gohan concentrating ki at his fingertips for the decisive attack on Cell Max. Those are story details, not a published measurement of his strength.
The name and visual design have an explanation attributed to creator Akira Toriyama in a 29 June 2022 ComicBook.com report. The article reproduces translated comments credited to Toriyama, with the translation attributed to @Herms98. Toriyama reportedly described the form as Gohan’s unique evolution, drawing on the sort of awakenings he had as a boy, and said “Beast” suggested that an inner beast had awakened. He also reportedly moved away from an initially frightening, pale-skinned design that did not feel like Gohan, choosing instead the familiar large, upward-swept hair. This is a secondary report of his comments, not a direct verification of the original post.
How did Gohan unlock Beast?
The official recap separates two moments that can be easy to conflate. Piccolo and Pan first draw Gohan back into the fight; anger then helps him regain his Ultimate form, in which he battles Gamma 1. Later, after Cell Max is unleashed and batters Piccolo, Gohan sees his teacher in grave danger. That is the crisis immediately preceding the Beast awakening.

In Beast, Gohan turns the surge of ki into a focused fingertip attack against Cell Max. The recap presents the transformation as an emotional response with a decisive battle purpose, rather than as a change caused by a stated training milestone or a quantified threshold. The sequence is recapped by the Dragon Ball Official Site’s account of the Super Hero arc.

What does Beast do in the manga after the film?
The manga continues beyond the events shown in the movie. In the chapter 102 recap, Goku senses the ki emanating from Beast Gohan from Beerus’s Planet and teleports to Earth. The recap establishes that feat as written; it does not attach a distance, multiplier, or power ranking to it. See the official chapter 102 recap.
The following chapter’s recap describes a post-film clash between Goku in Ultra Instinct and Gohan in Beast. Both hold back, so the scene is not presented as a conclusive test of either fighter’s full strength. The official chapter 103 recap calls this the conclusion of the Super Hero arc; Toyotarou also says the Volume 24 showdown was not in the movie in an official Dragon Ball site interview.

Is Beast stronger than Ultra Instinct Goku?
The official material cited here does not settle that question. Chapter 103 shows Goku and Gohan facing off while holding back, rather than declaring a winner or publishing a hierarchy. Toyotarou described the question of who is strongest among Goku, Vegeta, Gohan, Piccolo, and Broly as the reason for depicting the showdown; that framing is a rivalry, not an ordered ranking. Beast is clearly a major new power state, but the available official account supplies no numeric level and no definitive answer about where it places Gohan relative to those characters.
